AWT@GCGC: who knew?!
« on: December 08, 2014, 01:26:52 PM »
Recently I was made aware of this 1936 article from the Chicago Tribune.  Is it known Tilly did some bunkering on the first hole at Garden City?  It was news to me.  Anyone with pictures of "the bearded spine of traps", present day or from back in the day, please feel free to post them!

Joe,

From the 1/15/1929, Brooklyn Eagle, it was considered an entirely new hole and not just an adding of bunkers :

I was misreading that Trib article and incorrectly assuming the bunker changes were done on his tour for the PGA.  My bad!

That happened the first time I read it as well... No pain no gain...

If I remember correctly, the Tilly redesign of the 1st hole at GCGC was mentioned in their club history.

I need to re-read their club history book.  I think I missed it!

Joe:

That's correct, the little ridge that divides the first fairway into two pieces [and the section of fairway to the right of it] was added by Tillinghast.  I'm not sure of the date of the addition, but it was specifically for the 1936 Amateur, so probably a year or two before the event.

Sorry I don't have a picture in digital form.  The "bearded spine of traps" is currently just a grassy ridge ... it's hard to keep that sandy moundy look over the long term.  Maybe Pat Mucci can help start a campaign to put it back.

Thanks Tom...I have not played Garden City Men's and my question was going to be if the bunker is still there.

Joe...thanks for posting!

There is no mention of Tillinghast in the GCGC history book.  However, given the book's skimpy overview of course changes, it leaves many unanswered questions.

One of my members here at Carolina has a connection to GCGC.  He doesn't post here but does browse on occasion (browse is a better word than lurk  :)).  Anyway, I emailed him the link to this thread to see if he knew anything and he sent me the following:

"Great stuff.  I was mistaken about which side of #1 they were speaking of, in fact it was at the time the middle of the hole and now kind of defines the right side.
The GM is a friend of mine and was kind enough to give me a copy of the 100th anniversary history book (1999) so I pulled it out....a cursory glance made no mention of Tilly but I think the fact he worked on #1 is not in dispute.  I did however take a pic of #1 which is attached.
If you look at the diagram in Reply #1 of the thread you can see two distinct fairways left & right of the "spine'...  It is different now.  The photo shows the spine but now the right fairway (as shown in the diagram) is sand traps out to about a 230yd carry.  It appears that all of the "spine" is still in place but 60%+ of the right side fairway has been eliminated.
#1 is a great hole (really aren't any lousy ones at GCGC).  Funny story, the small range runs down the right side of #1 and the entirety of it is in bounds.  I always carry a yellow or pink ball just for that tee shot.  When I am playing in a member/guest I get a particularly big kick out of whipping out a pink ball and explaining that even if I'm 50yds into the range "finding this baby is no problem whatsoever"...
...lots of our opponents then whip it into the range and it's gone forever ;0)  That's probably not very nice of me is it?
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, great info.  This thread is spectacular too, I had never seen it before."

Just wanted to share...

So--a couple of us have examined the GCGC history book and found no mention of Tilly regarding anything having to do with the course.  I'm thinking that even if there were gaps in the research done for the book, would the involvement of Tilly be ignored?   But, did Tillinghast visit GCGC in this mid-30s PGA consultant visits?
