A heavy downpour exposed a drainage problem on #5. Fortunately it was discovered before the grow-in was complete.

After the repair...

Except for a reconfiguration of drainage between 17 and 18, most of the current work is mowing, trimming and manually filling in weak spots with black soil. The fairways are cut to .5" - here on #18:

The Celebration has spread well.

The fairways are looking nearly finished with over three more weeks of grow-in remaining. #1:

#3:

The bank on the right of #3 has settled and receiving a weed-whack. The water has been kept at an artifically low level during construction.

After the trim:

Bunker edges and the surrounds are receiving a trim. #5 before...

and after.

The edge on #2

Mowing the surrounds to a .6" height.

Bunker on #1 after a mowing pass on the TifGrand.

From a distance, #7 looks finished. The eyebrows behind the bunkers short of the green have been cut away.

Some irrigation still needs to be done by hand. The large pond to the right of #14 is now much more visible so several cypress trees have been planted near the bank.

When do you expect the course to be open for play?

As the grass continues to grow, mowing levels are dropping and problem areas are being sodded and watered. Much of the areas between holes will be covered with mulch as here on #1:

After sodding the area on the right of #1 the irrigation is turned on.

Topdressing on greens, tees, and approaches - here on the 3rd green:

The orange line determines the border of the green collar.

Here's the process on the 6th green...

and the 5th now cut at .15"

A closeup of the 2nd green shows how well the Tifeagle has taken.

Even the nocturnals want to see what's going on:

Heavy rain has dogged the crew for the last few weeks - over 3" fell last weekend. Even with all that, the course looks great overall and opening is on schedule for Friday, 9/4. One benefit of the rain is that the new drainage has been given a stress test and remaining problem areas can be addressed before the course opens. For example, the fairway on #3, one of the lowest areas on the course, still didn't drain as expected so some additional work was done.

Another problem area - right of the 5th green - received an extra drain and larger pipe. First, the water was removed with a pump.

The intense rain brought down some of the sand in the new Better Billy bunkers although there was no soil contamination.

Repairing the damage was done quickly.

Repairing the fairway bunkers on the 9th:

On a couple of the greens the sprigging didn't take perfectly...

so after some turf surgery...

the area was covered with sod and mowed:

Much of the off-fairway understory has been cleared and has been seeded or mulched. Prepping the ground waas done by this ferocious-looking device, the Perfecta II:

The Perfecta at work:

And the cleared ground after:

The putting surfaces and surrounds have been given heavy doses of top dressing as seen here on #13.

Mowing the 5th green:

At the turnaround, the mower creates small piles of sand left from the top dressing. After the mowing, it's removed with a blower.

Fairways - here the 4th - are filled in and being mowed every day or two.

The 6th receiving an early morning mow. Note the new panoramic view behind, thanks to the careful pruning and tree removal.

Payback for earlier tree removal led to planting these Chickasaw Plum trees behind the 1st tee.

The small house next to the pro shop entrance has been enlarged with meeting rooms and a halfway house. A little landscaping will follow.

This is it. The course is open for play so here are a few photos showing the final preparations on Friday morning prior to the first tee time. Mowing the 3rd green...

...and the 4th tee.

The 4th hole, ready for play:

The new bunkers on the left of the 5th approach - note the new wood rake:

A closeup of one of the new rakes:

And one of the new flags:

On the first tee, waiting for the first group:

If you've been following the progress of the renovation and have a chance to play the course, I look forward to reading your comments on the result. Cheers.

Craig:
Thanks, again for keeping up with this.     Can't wait for another trip to SC and C3.
