RIP - Mark Amundson
« on: August 25, 2014, 04:38:38 PM »
Mark was a major player in South Dakota golf and the Sutton Bay development and hosted an GCA get together at Sutton Bay several years ago.  Mark died in an ATV crash.

This is very upsetting news.  I had the pleasure to spend a lovely fall day with Mark at Sutton Bay many years ago and he couldn't have been a more kind, gracious host and passionate golfer.  RIP Mark.

"Many of us have dreams and he's one of the few who made his dream happened," Roberg said. "Because of him we have something that's a national treasure, in my opinion."

How very true this observation is that Mr. Roberg shares.  Mark was so much like many of the folks that are avid fans of golf course architecture and design, but also had the vision and courage and confidence to go out and develop the vision.  He would be every architects dream collaborator to develop a world class golf facility.  He had such high praise and friendship with Graham Marsh.

But, maybe the most revealing aspect of Mark's strong character is how he managed to stick with the dream of Sutton Bay in the face of disaster with the entire land mass of the first course geologically sloughing off and litterally breaking the land in multiple places.  Yet, Mark reorganized, and they relocated the course to higher ground above the first site.  That much drama and disappointment would have broken many the less of men.

I can't say enough of how welcoming Mark made our group the two excursions we made with various GCA contibutors.  He came out on foot and walked and played along with everyone in the groups, explaining all the significant architecture and construction issues faced and designed into the golf course.

RIP and condolences to his family.  His brother caddied for Swampy at the Whistling Straits Senior Open.  What a proud and acclaimed family of golf significant figures in South Dakota.

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Mark treated Laure and me like royalty when we visited Sutton Bay in 2011.  A real gentleman who supported the game of golf.

This is so sad.  Prayers for peace for his family.

Absolutely terrible news. I had a bit to do with Mark in my years with Marshie.
He was a terrific bloke.

RIP Mark.

Mark was also there in the early days of the Prairie Club. Overseeing not only the construction of 3 courses, but also the main lodge and a couple of cabins.

He never seemed to sweat any of it.

A great loss to golf in our region.

Terrible news.  I was lucky enough to play Sand Hills with Ammo (what his buddy Paul Schock called him) and hung around Prairie Club a bit while it was being built.  Also played the first edition of Dismal with him where he made a 2 on the par 4 8th after driving the green. Golf lost a class act.  Prayers to his family.  So sad.

This is very sad news. I wasn't able to meet Mark last year when I was at Sutton Bay as he was back home undergoing surgery. It's sad to know I won't have another chance to meet him after this unfortunate accident. Sutton Bay is an exceptional place which will be just one of Mark's legacies.

This is very sad and tragic news. I cannot understand why people choose not to wear seat belts where & when they are available.
Seat belts save lives. It is a simple as that.

This is so terribly sad.

He treated me (and all of his guests) like an old friend. I will always be grateful for the open-armed welcome he gave us.

I played golf with Mark only once, on the back nine of the original Sutton Bay, during one of my first visits. He had a BEAUTIFUL swing -- demonstrated here on the 18th tee:

What a loss to everyone who knew him.

No words.  Other than to say he was a great man, great host, and so gracious with his time.  He left a legacy and I pray for the peace of his closest friends and family as this is a huge loss.

He sure did have a pure swing.
This was him at a range in Florida sometime in the 90's trying to teach me how to hit it.

I also attended the GCA outing in April of 2005 and Mark met me at the door and then poored me a tall beverage himself after my long drive from Omaha.

Golf in the Midwest lost a hero, my condolences to his family.

Never met.  Never will.  We all are diminished by his family's loss.

I will never forget playing with him at Sutton Bay during the 2005 outing.  I would shoot something like 48 into the wind and 38 down wind.  My friend who was a scratch handicap would be more like 42-36 and Mark scored very similar scores on each side - pretty close to par.  He could hit a very low shot and control it.

This video will give you a sense of the wind:

I thought I had a video of Mark's tee shot on 15 but I cannot find it in photo bucket.

I met Mark at Sutton Bay just after it opened. He was genuinely passionate about golf and golf courses. We corresponded a few times and shared memories of the early Sutton Bay, its struggles and successes. What a tragic loss.
