Archerfield or Not as part of Scotland Trip
« on: September 02, 2013, 12:43:00 PM »
Per previous post, I am putting together my first Scotland trip.  My itinerary includes these courses at this point and was wondering if I should add Archerfield (1 or both courses?)  Looks like the fees are relatively high, but won't be a budget killer. Please advise.  Thanks

Royal Troon
Turnberry (ailsa)
Western Gailes
Prestwick
Dundonald Links (alternate)
St Andrews (Old)
Carnoustie
St Andrews (New)
Kingsbarn
Lundin Links (alternate)
Crail or Elie
Muirfield
North Berwick (West)
Gullane 1

Dan,
Taking the long view, how many trips are you planning for Scotland?

Dan,
Great that your planning this trip.
You obviously can't play everywhere, but if you don't head a bit further north to the Royal Dornoch/Brora area, and also more east to Cruden Bay/Royal Aberdeen, you might look back later and wish you had. Unless there's good reason not to, my recommendation would be that you amend your list a little reducing those on the west coast and adding in some of the north and east delights.
All the best

Master plan is to do a later trip to the North to catch those mentioned.  The tough decision will be whether that trip comes before or after a trip to Ireland.

And then repeat the whole rota again.  Assuming I am able physically and financially.

Dan,

Always go to Scotland first and when you go to Ireland don't try to play so many courses. Just pick an area and try to arranges games with locals. Worst mistake many first time visitors to Ireland make is sprinting around trying to play a long list of courses.

Dan,

you would be better off playing Luffness New, Kilspindie, Longniddry, Gullane 2 or 3 or going down to Dunbar before playing Archersfield. Don't get me wrong Archersfield is okay but there is a lot of good links golf to be had at a better price. Not sure how greenfee play at Renaissance works but I am sure Simon H will chirp in and let you know.

Dan,

Fit that trip in to Holland, its worth it, ask the BUDA participants....

Dan, I've played them both. I agree with John that you're better off playing Luffness New, Gullane #2, Dunbar or Renaissance if possible. I played them when they were very new. There is the Fidra and Dirleton courses. The one that opened last is the better of the two. Fantastic practice facility.

Tim,
Just curious.
How many people have told you they made a mistake "sprinting around trying to play a long list of courses" ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D
seems like a nice problem to have.
But your point is well taken-and I'd sure like to be doing that soon
