Need Help with The Pennhills Painted Plan
« on: June 05, 2013, 10:21:19 PM »
I'm looking for help on this one.

This is image is painted on a wooden board over the fireplace in the men's grill of the Pennhills clubhouse possibly by Clifford C. Wendehack.
Anyone know who would have created this image if it wasn't him?

Pennhills features an original nine by Walter Travis. They even have the working drawings for the second nine by Travis too. I was there when they were found (a full set of linens!).The second nine was eventually built by Dick Wilson and pretty much followed Travis's routing, but the architecture had nothing to do with Travis.

What's compelling about this plan is the middle holes do not match Travis or Wilson and the design for the second nine on this painting is unknown.

We could not find another name on the plan, but it is very dark (soot) unless photographed with a flash.

Any help would be appreciated.

C. Wendehack Signature?

With every golf development bubble, the end was unexpected and brutal....

That 14th tee looks pretty scary!

Wendehack did the clubhouse (and Winged Foot and Park), correct?

When you're down there next, go up the 219 a bit, cross it and go play Pine Acres. Let me know what you think of that joint.

Yes, this was the original design for Park CC, but deemed too small.

Ron, have you played Pine Acres?

I loved playing Pennhills during my golf-crazy teen years. It is a schizoid a course as you will find. The Travis holes @ Pennhills are great--simple with wonderful greensites and contoured greens. The Dick Wilson holes--er, not so much--except for the par 3 up the hill and the next tee shot, more like Florida holes in NW PA.

I played most of Pine Acres a few years back. It is a challenging woodland course...you can't avoid trees in that part of NW PA. No links lovers need apply.

I've played Pine Acres a few times - our club used to send about 10 guys every year to their annual two-man best ball tournament back when it was sponsored by Rolling Rock.  Lots of (free) beer and decent golf meant a great day - the local economy has really been hit hard in recent years and the tournament has lost most of its sponsors.  The value wasn't there anymore so we haven't been back for about 4 or 5 years.

Still, I remember it fondly.

Back on topic though...

Ian,

Just sent you a PM with the names of some older members of the club.  Hope it helps.
