Chicago flooding. Again.
« on: April 19, 2013, 02:31:28 PM »
Good News- 70 in Chicago today

Bad News- 36 hours of rain and extensive flooding....   :-\

Jud:

Just saw a photo of the 16th Green at OFN, which is now an island.  Wonder how many courses are going to see some damage.  My bet is Winnetka is under water, Glen View is having their usual problems, the 10th at Flossmoor is a bit soggy and everything else with a creek running through it is having an issue.

Harborside, from what I hear, has achieved their target conditioning.

Sven

Beyond the above, how have other Chicago-area courses fared from the downpour on Wednesday and Thursday?  I just confirmed that Winnetka is once again flooded, and closed for the weekend.  Sigh.

Following are some photos of OFCC that were posted on Twitter:

I would assume Medinah and Butler are having their issues...

Howard:

Those photos are all in the vicinity of the 16th green of the North course, which is near where the creek passes under the road into the club.  That road was rebuilt recently in connection with changes to the nearby 17th hole.  One can only surmise that the culvert that was built to allow water to pass under the road couldn't handle the storm surge.

Maybe we're not so bad off here in Minnesota after all. I was envying the green in those photos, but not the water.

Sven, not that it matters, but none of the pictures that Howard posted are of 16 North.  They are as follows:
1st picture is of 3 North fairway and the 6th green is to the right.
2nd one is of 9 South.
3rd one is 15 green South.
4th one is the 16th tee South with the 11th green to the left.
5th one is of 6 North green.

You are correct that 16 North is at a low point and is a complete island green at this point, but South takes a much harder hit when we get that much rain because it's a flood plain and Butterfield Creek overflow.

Ryan:

You're right, my eyes must be going.

I guess I was hoping that the real flooding was limited to the area around the 16th.  Seems like that is not the case.

Yesterday was the first time since I moved to Chicago that I could even detect a current in the Chicago River, and it was flowing TOWARD the lake!  Later I read that they had to re-reverse the flow because Deep Tunnel was at max.  Crazy.  There was a lot of debris piled up around the barges that are working on the Wells Street bridge project.  And the River has changed from it's trademark puke green to a puke brown color.

Wow.  thank you for sharing the pics.
Would anyone have more photos of what is happening in the area?

I thought Shivas was just being a dick telling you not to comment on things of which you have no knowledge.

The new bridge was built in the same place as the old bridge, which is UPRIVER from the 16th green, so if "One can only surmise that the culvert that was built to allow water to pass under the road couldn't handle the storm surge,"  then "one" would be an idiot.  The new construction allows the same if not more flow under the entrance bridge.

This is not all that uncommon a flood at OFCC.

Point taken, Paul.

I'm sorry to see that much of the courses under water.

It will be gone in a day or two, and since it's early in the season, probably not any real damage to the course.  But this would be a good time for a two or three week drought!

I suppose this is a bad time to point out Butler would be a risky US Open course...butthen again they took the risk at OFCC and Medina.

Medinah will be open tomorrow.  There's usually only 3-4 holes that are impacted by water.  Luckily, we don't have 95 degree temps to back up this rain like last time.  This rain was good timing being in April - in a week most golf courses won't show a trace of the rain.  The same can't be said for these rains when they occur in July/August.

Ryan,
Will the deluge delay any work on #1? Any interest in posting the progress on the reno work- maybe a seperate thread. Appears to be the only work going on in Chicago these days.

Butterfield Creek runs through Idlewild, Flossmoor and OFCC.  It is classified as a navigable waterway and thus no work can be done to change its course or banks absent permission fronm the Corps of engineers.  I remember a time in the 70's when Idlewild had water above the ball washer on the 8th tee.  Not a new problem.

Well, as you can all see, good old Butterfield Creek went over its banks, but the good news is with our new drainage at Flossmoor, as soon as the creek goes down, so does the flooding. Same at OFCC. Glad it's only April, as this can happen a couple of times a season.
