What do people have against ball washers?  Clutter?  Unnecessary expense?

If they're on the tee, does that mean you putted with a dirty ball?

Good point, well made.  Now I know why I don't play off scratch!

Padraig,

that layer of mud on the ball is the "poor man's" version of the soft face insert to help cope with greens at the local muni stimping at 15 feet. A common solution to a big problem up here in the wilds of the north ;D

4 small buckets with water in a wooden case is enough to maintain a wet towel and clean your balls. Ball washers are unnecesarry. A small hole sign however, no color on it, does not in my mind cause visual contamination.

I have never understood ball washers on tees. We got rid of them and put the in ground trash cans in so only a plate with yardage on a tee. If you are lost you could compare the plate to the score card and know if you are on correct hole.

Mike-I get the less is more direction that tee markers have taken. To me any signage should have the hole number as the only prerequisite. No comparisons are required.

I say get rid of hole signs altogether.

I would prefer a tablet computer on each tee that gives the official yardage, a hole flyover, GPS offering distances to multiple hazards, tips from the pro on the best strategy, a beer-cart pager that allows a group to call for service, and a food menu that allows players to order from the turn in advance. The tablets should also have games and other apps installed that allow groups to pass the time while waiting for a slow group in front. For that matter, they should include a feature that sends messages to the group ahead that they can read when they arrive at the next tee's tablet, like "While we're young!" or "Nice putt on 6!"

The tablets should also have an app that players could sync to their phones and use in place of a scorecard. This way, multiple groups playing in a game together could track scores in real-time either on their phones or at the tablet on each tee. Club-level tournament golf would benefit tremendously from real-time scoring as well. Other basic functionality should include a weather tracker with radar, easy access to stream live PGA golf along with college and pro sports telecasts, and easy access to take Vines of the swings and antics of playing partners.

Seeing the title of this thread made me realize we do not have tee signs or ball-washers on my course.  I never noticed.

back when I was a lad and starting out they had a white box, similar to Alwoodley's, except it was on legs. One half had a pail of water, the other side was for trash. Ball washer on one end. Hole number stenciled, along with the yardage.

MClutterbuck, here are the rock creek signs (Photos are from GCA, Brian Curley):

I'm not sure I remember correctly but I think each hole is named after a movie? Western, maybe?

Signs by the Sea have become fairly popular at some area clubs. I've seen hole signs, name placards and even golf car directional signs: http://signsbythesea.com/golf-collection/golf-signage/

Thank you everyone for your input. Great points made by all. In the end we believe that a basic hole sign was needed since we will have some limited outside play, and especially since we have a few tees in proximity of each other. Picture below of what we have implemented, yardage from back tees to be added shortly. A small post will give it a few inches of separation from the ground and still not impact the natural and rugged look of the course.

By the way, this is just a small example of how Golf Club Atlas has impacted the design and preparation of our course. Proud that Tom Doak included our course in the list of most unique courses, fastest fairways, as well as best cart courses (given we top the list of unwalkable terrain - that Tom still managed to walk!).
