Where does Harry Vardon fit in as an architect?

I am aware of a few Vardon courses in the UK. I am not always sure how much of the final design is actually Vardon's. He is credited with Sandy Lodge, but my researches when helping with their centenary book showed that the founder and proprietor, Markes, was the architect of note and Vardon basically backed him up. Vardon is also credited with Little Aston, but I think there is some debate as to how much he actually did there. Can anyone give me more authoritative information?

I think Vardon was probably one of the earliest Signature architects. He seems to have done a "Sandy Lodge" at Murcar too where Archie Simpson gets co-credit but likely did all or most of the work. I could be wrong but he didn't seem to take up the business of gca in the same fashion as his great contempory's Braid and Taylor.
