I've been drinking, so take this with a sip of scotch....

But it PHOCKING pisses me off that both Riviera and Pebble are in the PGA Tour rotation during the absolute worst weather that California has to offer!!!!

Even when the weather isn't bad, at least it's cold(ish). Pebble in August/September is amazing. Riviera pretty much ANY TIME other than February is AMAZING.

Why now????

If you were a member or an owner collecting fees, when would you rather give up your course for a week?

Other courses on the rota give up their courses during prime time!! Why can't we here in Cali???

I'll join you with a nip of Vodka.

1.  though travel is much more fluid nowadays...the tour still follows the sun with Hawaii, the SW, then goes to Florida where it can hit the Northern, Eastern and Midwest sites when THEY have a much tighter band of good weather to capture.

2.  Even if that wasn't the case, I disagree that the weather in LA in February is terrible.  And Riviera has had problems on a couple of occasions with a mid-summer visit.

cheers

David,

I can't tell you how many times I flew to L.A on business also intending to play golf only to encounter cold, rainy weather.
Sometimes even in Palm Springs.

Agree it can be frustrating, take another swig. ;D

David, I look at where the Tour could go by month and it is pretty obvious why California dates are in the Winter.  In the Summer you can go to Canada, Iowa, Chicago, or Boston and count on golfable weather.  In the Spring/Fall it expands a bit to include areas like North Carolina.  In the Winter?  Florida, Arizona, California, Hawaii.

Texas wouldn't work this time of year, would it?

I don't think the weather is great there right now, but given that half the country has snow... I would take weather in the 60's and a chance of rain.

As others have said, it's due to the weather in the rest of the country, outside of those 4 states.  Pretty much the same as the outdoor Super Bowl locations rota.....until next year.  There are many people wishing that next year's SB experiences at least one of: extreme cold, 34 degree rain and wind, snow, sleet, freezing rain, blizzard.

This does not address the order the tour visits warm weather states.   The tour would be better off going from Hawaii to Florida which is much more pleasant in January/February and then go to California in March.  March is a bit warmer in California and the average rainfall drops during the month.

I think the explaination is either tradition or that courses would rather host tournaments when the weather is the worst.  I'm not sure the tour would get to play Pebble Beach and Riviera if the tour played there later in the winter.

David starting to fear for your liver as this thread stretches on........

All kidding aside are those not the traditional dates for those two tournaments? The Players was finally moved, but it took 25+ years to do it.

Ha, I was just suggesting that as the reason, not saying it was correct. The Players works much, much better in May than March. That course makes for better tv when it is fast and firm. I think Pebble does too, but it would be difficult to get it too firm and get that many golfers around.

The tour was originally routed across the country geographically so you wouldn't be in Florida one week, California the next, and then back to Florida.  I would certainly agree California would be best in October, but the season is pretty much over by then.

Most importantly - what brand/year of scotch are you drinking?

I don't care. I just want the rest of the country to see Riviera in the spring. Los Angeles weather is amazing 9 or months out of the year. Just play the tournament one of those months. That's all I'm sayin.

Good article in the new New Yorker (w/ the Brooklyn hipster Eustace Tilley on the cover) about a Scotch ... sorry, a whisky ... called Bruichladdich.

Rihc Goodale can teach you how to pronounce it.

I'd really love a PGA Tour event played near Montreal in mid november...

38 Fahrenheit, 20mph wind
fairways uncut for 2 weeks and aerated.
Greens slow running at 5 away from the hole and 7 around the cup that hasn't been changed for a month...
May the best player win. Game on.

It would help if the Tour had accepted the world concept of greg norman in the 1990's... Australia and South Africa for 2-3 weeks and arriving in California in March.
