I'd say that if you are a younger person, who is a good player and desires a tougher challenge on a regular basis, and you are not put off by cart golf, your better choice is Bulls Bay.  It is a big brawny course that will present more day in and day out challenges to hone a good golf game.  And, my guess is the membership and atmosphere is a younger and more active crowd.

If you are a person that likes the fun of a great walk with interesting and clever golf shot making, Yeaman's seems to me to be the better choice.  It is dripping with atmosphere of a bygone era, and is just a grand old golf course.  I have no idea what the membership social life is like.  As mentioned the CCofC may be a notch less golf design quality.  Although, since I've last played there, what looks like a very substantial and excellent reno-resto took place and greens and bunker array have really been shined up to look very cool.

I remember playing CCofC once with a past Pres of the club who was a very gracious host.  He had to leave after 9 and I finished late afternoon in the early spring, playing the last 9 alone.  It was a beautiful evening, and I remember finishing 18 and lingering for a while to watch a group of about 15-20 25-35year olds who apparently came to the club after work, and they all seemed quite familiar and friendly with each other and were in a very comfortable and what appeared usual game of putting for quarters on the putting green.  They all sipped their beverages, and in a graceful manner embraced a great evening.  I thought to myself that the vibe of that place seemed greatly alluring.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Congrats!!

I generally get out that way at least once a year.  I look forward to being hosted at Bulls Bay for repayment for my contributions to this thread and, therefore, your membership.   ;D

I just joined Bulls Bay.  I think the golf course is a lot of fun and the membership and setting is more my style.

Paul--

Enjoy; good to have another GCAer in the Lowcountry. I live up in Pawleys Island. The two Strantz courses in town are not quite the equal of Bulls Bay, but they're pretty darn good nonetheless.

Cheers.

Beaufort is probably a little too far to be considered Charleston, but I thought Secession was an incredible fun course.  Thought it was really good.

Congrats on your relocation and new club Paul! I'll shoot you a note the next time I'm down in Charleston (which is fairly often) and we'll have to get together for a game or a drink.

Congratulations on joining a fine golf course..I belve Joe Fairey is a member there?
Great guy look him up, hovers around this site from time to time.

As for courses in the area...Seccession is a real treat in my opinion Devlin's best design and just down the road Chechessee which is always a treat to play.

Congrats, Paul. Great news!

I played Bulls Bay last fall and had a great day. Real fun course.

I'm going to be down in Charleston in a few weeks....are the courses there predominantly dormant grass this time of year? Bull's Bay?

Everything in NC is and very few overseed here. Wasn't sure on Charleston.

Ryan, the general rule of thumb up here in Myrtle Beach (and, I would assume, in Charleston) tends to be that the public/resort courses overseed at least tees and fairways and often rough around greens and sometimes greens themselves. The private clubs tend to either overseed very lightly or not at all. I would assume that's generally the case in/around Charleston. I played Bulls Bay two years less a day ago and recall no overseeding whatsoever.

A lot of courses seem to think that if their fairways weren't an unnaturally deep green in the winter, no one would ever play golf here again. I respectfully disagree but I don't run any golf courses down here.

Pretty accurate as I can tell.  Bulls Bay doesn't overseed except for tees.  The Country Club appears to have a light overseed on the fairways.  I think the resort courses are more heavily over seeded.

The conditions, since we have had a bit of rain, are different.  The fairways at bulls bay roll forever with a low shot but anything heigh makes a pitch mark and stops.  I have been playing with a friend who's is quite long but hits it high flying it 250 in the air....and that is how far it goes.  I have been hitting bullets--flying 220 but rolling beyon his ball.  I wish it would dry up a bit to get some bounce back for more ground game.

Played all three.  All great courses in their own right and in my mind (if you aren't counting Kiawah courses) the top 3 in Charleston.  With 10 rounds I would go:

4 - Yeamans
4 - Bulls Bay
2 - Charleston

Comparing Bulls Bay to the other two is like comparing Lebron James v. Bill Russell as to who is better.

I have never had any problem with playing off dormant grass, but I do agree that the issue is when it gets wet....then you have the splat effect which is no bueno.

Paul - I talked with Terry Florence and Lee Anne Brown at the SCGA's annual meeting in Columbia on Saturday. They are very pleased to have you as a member! Have you met Mike Bright, Doug McFarland, Phil Tralies or Mo York? All are great guys... try to arrange a game with them when you can.
