New Member Introduction
« on: December 03, 2012, 07:22:07 PM »
My name is Jeff Blume, and I think I might be remiss in that I was so intrigued by the discussions involving the Old Course renovations that I forgot to introduce myself.  Seeing other newbies create a thread of introduction made me aware of my fauxpas.  Anyway, I am a golf course architect based in Houston.  I began my career with Jeff Brauer in the late 1980's and continued with Robert von Hagge until 1997.  In that year I started my own firm.  Most of my work since opening my own shop has been in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, although I did do a new course in China last year.  I did alot of international work with von Hagge, mostly in Mexico and Japan (in conjunction with Mike Smelek, Rick Baril and Kelly Moran).  I learned a great deal about golf course design from Jeff and Robert, and consider myself lucky to have worked with such talented individuals.  Kelly was actually the first architect to introduce me to the profession by letting me come and visit the von Hagge offices when I was in school.  As Rick stated in his introduction, I too am a card carrying member of the ASGCA and have met alot of good people and established many good friendships in that organization.  Lester George and I got in the same year, and I have had many interesting and informative conversations with Ian Andrew (whom I consider the Moosehead drinking, hockey playing, Canadian version of the most interesting man alive).

I find it refreshing to read the opinions on this site (whether I agree with them or not), and think that the debate and dialog is a healthy thing for the creation and/or preservation of great golf course architecture (realizing of course that greatness is in the eye of the beholder).

Colin,

Thanks, it was beginners luck ;D.

Paul,

I think the last time the meeting was in Georgia (Atlanta 2006 or 2007) we played together at Hawks Ridge with Brit Stenson.  I'll look forward to seeing you next year at Reynolds Plantation.

Ian,

Touche' (I believe that is French Canadian for well done), I will buy the first round at the next meeting.  How is the your hockey team doing this year?  Since there is no NHL this year, it has to be better than the Leafs.

Sam,

I would post a few photos of Grand Pines if I knew how.  The project was one of those dream jobs that just fell into my lap.  I got the commission because of the work we had done on the Ravines Course at Elkins Lake up in Huntsville (similar style of course on equally good property).  The course was designed to capture the spirit of the golden age designers (mostly Tillinghast and MacKenzie), and is sited on rolling topography amongst a mature pine forest.  The motivation of the owner was to expedite the sale of his homesites within the Bentwater community, but the course itself will never have a home built around it.  It is bordered on two sides by the Sam Houston National Forest, and it is not uncommon to encounter wildlife during a round.  The membership is very exclusive in price and the fact that you have to own property within Bentwater to be eligible limits the market.  The course is always in great shape due to the fact that they are closed two days a week (Monday and Tuesday), and they only host around 10,000 rounds a year.

The owner wanted the holes to be somewhat isolated.  Consequently, it is rare that other holes are visible from the one you are playing.  The course plays to 7,100 yards from the back tees and is a par 72.  It is a little narrow in spots, but if one keeps the ball in play off the tee it can yield low scores.  My son and I enjoy a Sunday afternoon round at Grand Pines every so often because we don't bother anyone and there is plenty of beauty and wildlife to keep his interest (he is 6).  The greens are quick and challenging, but not overly contoured.

Ian may have the biggest North American forearms on the site. When he catches the ball, it leaves a trail of piss as it soars out and away. What is he, like 70 years old and still skating against the kids each winter? farck.

Sam,

Cypresswood's site is similar in charater, but Grand Pines possesses significantly more topographic relief.  High elevation to low on the property is approximately 70 feet.

Hey, Jeff is a nice guy and all, but if "Johnny Football" happens to win the Heisman this weekend, he will be an insufferable Aggie......in fact, part of me figures the timing of all this is to give himself an opportunity to gloat to a bigger audience!

I will say that he was probably the most talented of all the guys who ever worked for me, with John Colligan being a toss up.  I recall being in Singapore when Jeff B presided over a bid opening, and he, as a green as peas rookie, had the presence of mind to figure out why bids came in high, offer modifications, and then let the contract be agreed to right on the spot.

So many fond memories, but that whole Aggie thing did get old......

Lester,

How come you didn't get a sponsors exemption to be one "Big Break Greenbriar"?  Surely you could have taken the guy with the earring stuck in his eyebrow.  Old White sure looks good on the tube in HD.

Jeff,

The legend of Johnny Football continues to grow in College Station.  The latest is that he is doing all the shaping on our campus course renovation with a plastic spork.  Best contouring I have ever seen, and he takes good direction.

By the way, what did I do to you that made you demote me all the way down to the level of Colligan  ;D?

Seriously, the picture I saw of Woodland Hills in Lincoln looks great.  I still remeber the 11 hour road trip with Eric, Derek and Dan to go to the opening.

Hope all is well with you and Lester, and I look forward to seeing you both at Reynolds Plantation in the spring.
