Bob,
You are on to something.

With all due respect to the locals that have worked in good faith.  It is basically a "feel good" contribution with good PR for major corporate donors.  They can hype that they have done their part for underpriviledged kids trying to get into golf and life.  I've been involved with three 1st Tees and it was frustrating.  The problem is after First Tee, it hard for them to stay in golf.  There are so many golf courses that could have accepted such a program without all of the money being spent on First Tee specific playing grounds but that did not help promote on the national level as well.
Many, many in the industry will say the same in private but they can't afford to say the same in public.

Sorry for the treadjack diversion, but since Lynn may be looking in, and basketball did come up....

Lynn, what is your snapshot impression of Jack Taylor's scoring binge?  Was it even basketball they were playing?  And, the kid missed 56 shots out of 108!!! Are there many H.S. players that can make that many shots in their driveway in 36 minutes, alone?  ::)

My impression is that he was very tired after scoring 136 points, after the initial excitement neither team felt very good about the whole affair and that Faith Baptist probably lost some faith.

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

For example when I was 14 I had the passion and waited 4 hours on Saturdays to get a "loop" at Lakeside CC in Hollywood so that I could qualify to play free on Mondays, or I waited for an hour patiently on a wait list at Griffith Park muni so that I could get out during the twilight rate at 4 PM and get in as many as 14 holes before dark.

Apologies for the threadjack--but really?

I just assumed you played basketball 24/7 to get that good.

What do you think Lynn did for 4 hours every Saturday at the Caddyshack at Lakeside while waiting for a loop?  I'd guess shooting hoops....

Shooting hoops? those caddies were trying to pick a winner for the 5th race at Hollywood Park through their hangover.
I carried two bags, got the standard $4 per bag with a $1 tip per bag, went home feeling rich and got my parents off my back.  Then I went to the park and hanged on the rim and bent it.  More educational and fun than First Tee any day.
