I looked over the list of PGA tour courses for the worst most popular that the public can play.

So I would say We Ko Pa vs TPC Scotsdale.

And then I tried to think about courses in Palm Springs or Pinehurst, or Myrtle Beach that would fit into this comparison.

You could do it by architect also

Doak vs Palmer
Strantz vs. Rees Jones

I hear so many on this site drone on and on about how the masses don't get great architecture.

So, what are these great courses that no one wants to play?

JakaB,

The answer is blatantly obvious................... NGLA

Also, and much easier, what are the slogs the masses can't get enough of?

I'll come back to that, but, let's stick to the first of your questions first.

Pat,

I think that is true of most CBM courses. In my neck of the woods St. Louis CC and Chicago Golf hardly raise an eyebrow of interest.

Gleneagles PGA and Gleneagles Kings. Or Queens.

Where do you start with the first category?

Greatest vs worst might be a big leap but, for those familiar with a few mid price tracks in the south of England, I'll stick my neck out for Liphook vs Old Thorns all day long. As the crow flies they can only be a mile apart, but the masses all seem to love the latter.

Call it a thread jack if you will.

Top Ten I Might Dodge:

1. Sahalee:  If I want tunnels, I'll fly into LaGuardia.
2. Rustic Canyon:  I'm not flying to LA to play public!
3. Bethpage Any Color:  Which part of #2 didn't you get?
4. Hazeltine: I'd rather go to Minnesota to watch Michelle Bachman drown.
5. Oakland Hills:  it's in, or near, Detroit. Nuff said.
6. Cuscowilla:  too much competition.
7. Desert Forest:  I know I'd love it, but I'll be at the pool.
8. Pumpkin Ridge:  Bandon has queered me on other Oregon golf.
9. Brookline:  I'd rather play Boston Golf Club.
10.TOC:  I don't go to church, or hang with churchgoers.

PILE ON!

I'd have to disagree with 9. I think TCC has higher high points than BGC, and the changes they have made to open some of the holes up in the last two years have been very positive. Also, the last time I was at BGC, they were having a lot of agronomy problems with the greens. Anyone been there since September?

JakaB,

So, you have to ask yourself, on courses that have survived, mostly intact, for a century, with that pedigree, why do they "hardly raise an eyebrow of interest ?

Is it because today's golfer is so influenced by what he sees on TV every week ?

Do they identify and equate what they see with great architecture and great, interesting courses ?

I would hardly characterize Chicgo Golf as hardly raising an eyebrow of interest.  They keep an extemely low profile of their own choosing.  Of those who've heard of the course there's a ton of interest.  Access is another matter.
