Richard,

Please say "hello" to Bob Randquist for me.

He's one of the nicest, most competent Superintendents you could ever meet.

Hi Richard,

would really like to attend one of these but is not possible during the season as I have a golf course to look after. Hope it goes well as it surely must with that line up of speakers.

Richard,

I've snagged two game-time decision attendees to add to the group and will call in the info as soon as I have final confirmrmation. Kudos again for the superb line-up on tap. While we'd like to see more in the way of numbers, the quality of the presentation and what is shared will always be the true measure of the event's impact. Your team nailed the last two and I'm sure this year will only build on those fine efforts.

For any rope-riders out there...If you come, I guarantee you will be VERY glad you attended. To the committed pilgrims- see you there.

On to Pinehurst!

Cheers,

Rich --

Perhaps you could post videos of some of the presentations?

I'm sure that, among others, my daughter Rose, the Environmental Studies major and golfer, would be interested in quite a few of them -- but she's a student, hard at work (on a project about water conservation at golf courses) a thousand miles from you.

I would imagine that video streaming would be an excellent next step in widening the reach of Richard's Symposium. That said, from the conversations I've had with him, he feels(and I concur) that the attendee number should grow first to elevate the momentum and profile of the gathering.  What is significant to note is the vital need for an engaged, stimulating group of ON-SITE attendees, to ignite and increase the probing discourse this very progressive event generates. It CAN"T be duplicated by a detached, conference call approach. Live, personal interaction of a direct nature is essential for conversations of weight and passion.

Does it require extending oneself to attend? You bet. Is it worth it? Well if one really cares about the game, beyond just what you can extract from it, I would say that it is. Recognizing that we ALL lead busy lives and have different priorities, the quality of what Richard has presented during the first two gatherings was both outstanding and memorable.

NO WHERE at any of the many number of these golf industry, or related events that I've attended, have I found more CANDID, insightful sharing of critical information facing the major issues surrounding the game's overall health. There is little of the PC nonsense troted out elsewhere. The sharing of knowledge and questioning is on a level rarely experienced in larger group settings. I would say that some folks, not used to such frank expectations, have even gotten a little unsettled during the discussions. BEAUTIFUL!

That is exactly what is needed. For too long, to golf's detriment, status quo has been allowed to hold sway. It has proved very damaging and we are just beginning the long shake-out to recovery. Richard and his team are striving to make a difference. FEW have made his level of investment to try and contribute. The least those of us on GCA can do (and some have) is make the trip, at some point, to support his efforts. We advance not only ourselves, but also the postive energy this sport has always been capable off delivering when it is directed from a higher plane.

If you really reflect on the magnitutude of what the Symposium is addressing, from my view, and there are many noble efforts conducted by various members of this site, Richard's annual presentation is right at the top in deserving our commitment. Whenever the call goes out for a GCA golf-playing event of any stature, the rush to participate is generally swift.

This year's Symposium, by Richard's count, has just 3 GCA folk registered. Even allowing for some poor math or late commits...what does that say?

Respectfully,

Kris 8)

Richard (and Kris) -

I would love to attend this, but given that it's a very busy time of year for me work (4Q) and travel (holidays & work) wise I can't make it. I agree that on site discussion is key, but I also think it would help in pumping up future attendance if some of the presentations/discussions/seminars could be posted on YouTube.

Richard, any thoughts about holding the SOAG in St. Paul, MN in 2014 at the newly reopened Keller?

Kris:

Your two late additions bring the total pre-registered to 94.  We are shooting for 100.  Nonetheless, we have surpassed our pre-registrations from the past two years so far (70 and 75) so we are making inroads.

On the subject of video taping, we actually taped the whole symposium last year but never found the time to post the videos because of our workload.  This year we intend to videotape and I promise we will have the videos posted somewhere before January 1st.

On the subject of our survey, we are at 792 respondents.  Do you think we can get 8 GCAers by the end of the weekend?

We have been asked to take the Symposium on the road to California, but Keller may not be a bad place to do it in 2014.  We'll see how it goes.

Thanks and help us get to 100 registered and 800 survey responses by Monday!

Many thanks to Richard for putting on a great symposium this year.  Gordon Irvine's presentation on Askernish was particularly inspiring.  I would encourage everybody to read the threads on GCA about this incredible golf course.
