Corey Miller,

What part of my reply to Larry Munger was snide ?
It was a very matter of fact response.

Perhaps some are confusing slope with contour.

If one has played or seen the 6th at NGLA they will understand contour.  If they haven't, they should try to view some pictures of the green, many of which have been posted on this site.

To help understand what I mean by contour, look at the 7th green at Friar's Head or the 1st green at NGLA and you'll understand contour versus slope.

Good call on Thirteenth Beach Chris. Like the others, subtlety that lies in waiting until you see a putt finish nowhere near the hole.

Like I've said, haven't seen Commonwealth for quite a few years. Hopefully you can help me correct that  ;D

Tony,
I wouldn't say that the greens contouring at Thirteenth Beach is subtle, most of the slopes are fairly obvious and don't leave much to the imagination.  In some respects, they are similar to the RTJ course at the National, lots of movement on and around the greens, yet you still have a number of fairly straight putts when on the correct tier.  That said, I thought the greens were very good, both in maintenance and design, and provided much short game interest.

Contrast this with Commonwealth, where in two years of playing 1-2 times per week, except on putts of under a foot , I have never aimed a putt at the centre of the hole!

Pat-

I think I am beginning to understand the distinction between slope and contour though i am not familiar with National or nassau. :)

Still, I am not quite sure why Prairie Dunes 2,10 (two fabulous holes and greens) are not considered contoured.

Both provide "green within a green" type surfaces.  Ran has a wonderful profile of the course and it looks to me as if the pictures show contour rather than slope.  Does "Maxwell's rolls"  refer to contour or slope?

#s 8 and 11 at Kittansett both have great greens, very undulating that allow players to work the ball to hole locations, while demanding precise shots

11 is like a modified 240 yard reverse redan hole

#10 at Winged Foot West.  It has some severe breaks and slope to it.  Very tricky to read.

#7 at The Country Club at Brookline.  This was one of the holes I actually liked a lot there.  If I remember right it is somewhat of a Double Plateau green.

I don't remember the hole numbers but just about every green at Cape Arundel (Walter Travis) was wildly contoured. There used to be a few double greens only now they share collar or chipping areas.  Bruce Hepner has the greens restored out to their original shapes and sizes and they are unbelievable.
