Some more UK golf holes - only a few mysteries!
« on: September 01, 2012, 10:47:19 AM »
Here are some 6th holes – or that is how they are labelled. They could be wrongly labelled, of course, and we’ve seen with Rungsted that they need not be UK courses, but most will be! Where these courses have already been identified I take the misery out of it by acknowledging that.

A

The fine downhill par-three 6th at Llanymynech features a tricky, sloping green and lovely views over Shropshire. Later views will be over large expanses of mid-Wales.

B

6th green at Sunningdale Old.

C

Royal West Norfolk

D

Fulford 6th is the first of a lovely stretch of holes out in the country on the far side of the A64. Watch out for horse flies in the summer!

E

Crowborough Beacon. This is a good par three.

F

I think this is Ilkley. Could be wrong!

G

Definitely Sherwood Forest!

H

Burnham and Berrow

I

Ashburnham

J

Hunstanton, a remarkable short par-four played to a tiny green on top of a hill, usually at the mercy of the wind.

K

Southerndown.

L

Bramall Park, a good par five with OOB right, well placed drive and second shot bunkers and a difficult approach taking into account the big left to right slope in front of the green.

M

This course hasn’t yet featured.

N

Romiley, the lovely approach shot to the 6th green

O

And the exciting tee shot on Romiley’s 7th.

P

Wirral Ladies

Q

Burnham and Berrow

R

Not sure but it could be Wirral Ladies’ 7th.

Not immediately reminded of Ilkley with that photo at 'F' Mark... Although I could be the one who's wrong...

Mark I dont recogonise the first pic you list as Burnham, the second one is the 6th but that makes that pic at least 1976 because thats the newer 6th hole.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

Mark

Adrian is right, I don't recognize H as any hole at Burnham.  There is a bell down on the right with an evidently blind drive then an approach to a raised green.  I don't recognize the background either.

Wow, its easy to see why #6 was altered recently - though it didn't look like your pixs when I first knew Burnham.

Adrian and Sean, thanks for ruling out Burnham for H. I hadn't spotted the bell. I wonder if that could make it Tenby? I did Tenby on the same trip as Ashburnham, so it could be. Duncan Cheslett has been there recently. He may clear it up.

The only bell I remember at Tenby is on the 4th, a fabulously quirky par 4 with a blind drive followed by an even more blind approach to a hidden punchbowl green on the far side of a dune.

If Mark's mystery hole is at Tenby then it could be the 9th, which has a similar aspect to the western edge of the course. Many changes have been made to this section of the course in the last few years because of Health and Safety concerns over a busy public footpath connecting a large caravan site and the beach. Things would not look quite the same as when Mark visited; several tees and greens have been relocated.

Now it has come to me! I have identified H. I don't know why the penny didn't drop earlier. But I'll not tell you now as there are more photos from this course yo come.
