As if George Bahto wasn't enough of a highlight...

I just landed from an exhausting east coast drive, the last three days of which were 10 hour drive and sees through VT, NH, and up-state NY.  Of course, I was anxious to see any threads already posted by attendees of the Seth Raynor Society gathering at Wanumetonomy CC in Middletown, RI.  So far I haven't found any previously posted threads.  But, I may have missed it with so many new items popped up in a few days, and a new GCA format to boot.  So, if there is one already started, point me to it and I'll continue there with what my observations were.

But, I want to make my first comment about the joy it was to get to play a round with George Bahto (author of the book, "The Evangelist of Golf" about CB MacDonald) at CB's protege Seth Raynor's golf course, Waunotomomy, that has had some remodelling.  To top the day off, Anthony Pioppi was our third member for the round.  

To say the least, playing such a course with George was a grad class in golf course archeology and study of subtle and not so subtle restored-remodelled features.  A particular highlight is having George dissect and reveal the true Seth Raynor Eden 12th from the new, faux reverse Redanlike current configuration.  I have yet to download and study the pics and nned to ask someone to help post them.  

As ussual for my golf excursions, I have a tale of the trip to tell, this time where the good members of Waunumetonomy CC tried to poison me to death and nearly succeeded!    (a joke now, but not too funny for me last Thursday eve-Fri morn... )

  Dick good to hear you "survived" another trip.  I thought that "oyster" in Gothenburg was gonna kill you.  I'll be looking forward to hearing and seeing more of your excursion.  And if you can show me the Seth Raynor Society secret handshake, I'd be very thankful.

Here are some pictures of the Seth Raynor gathering at Waunometonomy CC.  The first is a view of the l12th lost Eden hole and where George located the original tee, and also found a suggestion that there were two diagonal crossing bunkers on the line of play for visual effect.  The picture further down where Anthony has released his tee shot is the new tees suggesting a reverse redan-like hole that doesn't work like a redan at all.  Of course there is a picture of the master George Bahto his own striking self and one of the greensite of the double plateau 15th.

That last of the 15th ("Maiden," George! ) only tells half the story. Just no way to convey the massiveness of that complex and the severity of its form. In the practice round, my foursome stayed and putted for 15 minutes just to try to figure out all the ways to handle being beyond the hole. Even at that, I "de-greened" my first putt on that green the last day of the tournament, after chossing between my three options for a line, which comprised fully 120 degrees of the compass.
Of course, as reported in the other thread about the Society's meeting, I birdied that sucker on day one!
