Hmmm.... yeah, I didn't read it close enough.  I guess it depends on the wind... Given the wind that we faced the day Mr. Hendren pinch-hit with my driver, then yeah, I'm lucky if 25 find the green, and 65 out of 75 that don't are likely gonna swim.  But that was one STRONG wind damn near straight in our face.

Average out all the wind conditions, and I'd like to think I'd make it over more than half the time.  I wouldn't get an ace - the golf gods have determined that is not my fate - but I do believe I'd make it over more than I wouldn't.

Just for reference, I have played the hole 4 times.  I hit the green twice, once made the carry but came up an inch short of the putting surface (for which Lou Duran wouldn't give me a GIR, which although he's correct I hate him for given it was one of the great shots of my life right into the teeth of the gale ;)) and once flew the ball over the left bunker into the sea, as described in another post.

So, 3 out of 4 to date... you make your own conclusions.   ;)

First off, I believe sea otters are indigenous to that area ...

Mike,
You Californians say sea otters, we Tennesseans say seals.  You say sushi, we say bait.  Whatever ;)

So - you've never been SHORT of the water?  2 on, one on the fringe, one over in the water?  Sounds like you might only hit 25% in the water?

Dan:

I have indeed never been short in the water.  I found the water long and left that one fateful time with Scott Burroughs where I listened too well to the caddie.  The others have all found dry land, either on the green or an inch short.

As for me only hitting 25% in the water, well... that was the intent of my demonstration!  But factor in the gag factor and I'll be happy with 51% finding dry land.

So you see, we have a happy medium between what Mike projected and what I think egotistically of my sometimes on, lots of times pathetic golf game.   ;)

Excellently weighed, and as I expected.

You big hitters live in a different world.

But not as different as the world Rich lives in.   ;D ;D ;D

I'll agree with Dan that the carry didn't seem nearly as long as I expected it to be-and there was no way in freaking hell i would have ever considered a layup for the one opportunity I'll probably ever have to take that swing.  No freaking way, even if I was playing for anything less than a significant Nassau, the match was either even or I was down, my opponent was already in the drink with his tee shot, and there was a southerly wind in our face left to right (as our caddie said there usually is in the winter)-and you know something, I would still go for it, particularly since I know now that a driver hit reasonably well puts me over the green.

Back to the subject at hand...

It's interesting to note how often the rounds that exceed expectations include our own Mr. Huntley. Perhaps the course isn't nearly as important as the companions.

DK:

So true, any golf with Mr. Huntley makes for a great day without a doubt.  Yes, the companions matter more than the course, at least when the companions are extraordinary as Bob most definitely is.

That being said, he wasn't part of this group PLAYING Cypress, although he certainly was there in spirit.   ;)

Mike Golden:  you and I think EXACTLY alike re this issue.  For your sake I'm not sure if that's a good thing... ;)

And I'd pay good money to caddie for you in that round, Shivas.  I'm thinking you'd need me to keep you sane so you even MAKE IT TO 16.   ;)

Tom,

We probably think alike on many things (except for Cinnabar and Larry of Troy) which is most likely a good thing in my mind...

Did you notice just the one tee box?

Did you notice the other that is no longer in use?

To carry the sea wall is exactly 197 yds.

Well said, right on my friend.

Whatever happened to ole Larry, I wonder?  Haven't talked to him in many years now... Maybe I ought not to wonder.   ;)

And Adam, yeah, just one tee box every time I've played it in the last few years... although I sure think I remember a longer one from my first crack at it, which would have been 1981.  Wasn't there one back and right of the current box, making the carry about 220, from slightly higher?

I've also always thought the shot from the current box is ever so slightly "uphill", that is, the box is a few fee below the top of the seawall.  Is this just my imagination?
