A quick intro…so after lurking for a few years, thanks to Ran, I am coming to the other side as a member.  Based on the subject matter experts on the site, it is bit overwhelming, but at a minimum it should be a learning experience and a hopefully a great way to meet those passionate about GCA.

I just turned 44, but I have been involved in golf for almost 35 years.   Thankfully, I have a highly tolerant wife that doesn’t play and a couple of kids, 17 and 10.  Not sure if the yips or the kids have had the bigger impact on my handicap increase.   Wouldn’t trade them for anything, but it would be nice to be able to make some more 3 footers and break par every once in awhile.

I grew up in Illinois and played competitively in high school and walked on in college, primarily for the free golf.  Received my BS from Bradley University and my MBA from UW-Madison.  I have worked for John Deere for over 21 years in product development.  This has fostered a kinship with the land, especially the green variety.

Having finally acknowledged that my competitive days are over, while somewhat depressing, it has made me more aware of the total golf experience including the architectural aspect.  So again, I am a novice to this group based on my knowledge and amount of great courses played, so be gentle.

I currently live in Raleigh and am a member at Raleigh CC.  In my mind, a great Donald Ross course and where I play most of my golf.   Probably a toss-up between Ross and C+C for my favorite architects.

Golf in 2011 included some decent highlights…not necessarily in this order.
        •   Sand Hills (best overall design)
        •   Dormie Club (probably missed some subtleties, the one I would like to play again)
        •   Dismal River (tons of fun, thanks CJ)
        •   Prairie Dunes (great test, would have liked more if I spent less time in the gunch)
        •   Old North State
        •   TPC Deere Run
        •   Diamante (some great holes, the wind embarrassed me)
        •   May River (best conditioned, greens were incredible)
        •   Sedgefield
        •   Musgrove Mill

For 2012, the to-play list is longer than the budget and time will allow, but the plan includes a Bandon Trip and hopefully visits to Chechessee, Secession, Ocean Forest, Ballyneal, Colorado Golf Club, Cherry Hills, Wild Horse, and Prairie Club.  And more if the opportunity presents itself.

For those that want to enjoy Ross’ work at Raleigh, let me know.

Again, thanks for allowing me to contribute; it looks like I better get the needle sharpened.

Happy New Year!!

Welcome Dan. Raleigh is a great course. It has a wonderful set of greens.  I get there a couple of times a year.  In fact I made a hole- in- one on number 17 when the flag was not even there. So much for aiming.

I too will say welcome Dan.

I (Like Tommy above) am a McConnell Golf member as well living down in Greenville play at Musgrove Mill.  Please let me know when you are coming down this way again, and I get up to Raleigh from time to time as well.  In fact I haven't been out to TPC Wakefield since it opened so I may want to go check that our next trip since it is part of our family now.

Do you still work for John Deere?  Were you out in Peoria for JD previously?  I have some friends who are engineers out there.

Drop me a pm with your contact info if you want.  And again welcome and enjoy!!

Dan,

If you are a walker, welcome. If not, bugger off!!!

Just kidding, hope to grab some Eastern NC BBQ with you at The Pit next time i'm passing through Raleigh!

Also, you will need to come to PA/NJ for a Flynn infusion at some time. Welcome indeed!

Since you are a once-and-future visitor to the Carolina Lowcountry, let me know when you get down this way again..perhaps we can set up a round either at Secession, down in Savannah, or some point in between...

Did you know World Woods has the best burger I've ever had in my entire life? I'm planning a trip back just for another one between rounds.

Welcome.

I can't remember his name but three or four years ago there was a frequent poster on this site that was from Raliegh CC. He had some interesting takes.

   Welcome, Dan.

I'm a fellow MVCer (Creighton). Many battles on the BB court between Bradley and CU over the years.

"Decent" wouldn't be the adjective I would use for your highlights of 2011 since your list  includes Sand Hills and Prairie Dunes!

Happy New Year!

Welcome Dan!

I live in Chapel Hill and live/play at Governors Club. RCC is a solid, fun course, always in excellent shape. If you've been at RCC for awhile, I'm sure we know at least one or two of the same people. And I agree with you about Sand Hills --  probably my favorite course ever, and C&C are my favorite architects.

Hope to meet and tee it up with you sometime.

Dan,
Welcome to the site. I also live in Chapel Hill. Let me know the next time you are thinking of teeing it up at Dormie Club. I haven't been down to see it yet so this would be a good reason.
