It's pretty sad that news of a new course would make this board but it something to keep an eye on.  Since MGM Resorts is involved, I would assume that Fazio will get the job?


About Mojito Pointe

Mojito Pointe is a $400 million casino resort (before financing fees and construction period interest) to be built on land controlled by Creative Casinos in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  The development was strongly endorsed by the voters of Lake Charles in a public referendum held in accordance with Louisiana law on April 30, 2011.  Creative has entered into a guaranteed maximum price contract with W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Company for construction of the resort.

Joel, Fazio already did a casino course in Lake Charles. It is nothing special or worse. I will check around and see what i can learn about the project. I would say whoever does the project will have a flat as a pancake piece of property with bay or lake frontage and a good bit of marsh.

I guess you mean the Bayou Golf Club?  I don't think this has any relation to it.

I could be wrong, I'm completely guessing that Fazio would get the nod.  Hopefully it opens the door to someone else.

New Orleans could use some good golf courses nearby. Pretty slim pickens.

I have always found it tough to find time for golf in NOLA. However, if one plays after lunch it can work out. Metairie Cc and NOLA CC are enjoyable plays within 15 minutes of the Quarter.

Joel that is correct. That is a very small market to have two courses from the same architect. But one never knows. Maybe he will put more effort in this time.

I will be curious to see how this goes, another mega resort in Lake Charles has been the talk for the last several years. I will also back up what Tiger said, I played Metarie yesterday, a really neat Raynor. From my hotel downtown it took 10 minutes to get there. This morning I played Money Hill in Abita Springs, it took just over an hour from downtown and was well worth it, very cool Ron Garl design with some awesome lakes holes.

Ron Garl, that's a name I haven't heard for awhle.  I met him at a trade show years ago and was impressed by his knowledge and pleasant, but direct one-on-one presentation style.  I also enjoyed his Fiddlestick GC near Fort Myers very much, and the beach bunkers he designed there.  I bet he would do great on this project.

I got a kick out of the promo Joel linked for us.  Great choice of musical background (Strunz and Farah?).  The promoters could do much worse than Fazio.  And who can sneeze at 2,000 new jobs?

Oh my, how times have changed!  Back in those dreaded days of 4.5% unemployment under "the worst president ever" (Bush), those would have been routinely derided as McJobs.  Today, they represent a great example of how government and the private sector can work together for the betterment of society.  We are indeed blessed to live in most interesting times!

Will the resort go in next to LDL where they were supposed to build Sugarcane Bay? Sadly I know the casino locations in Lake Charles to well.  I will say that I had some great etouffee the other night at Steamboat Bills.

Not at all.  The bunker I am thinking about- it was over 20 years ago- looked natural and provided the opportunity to recover from a marginally indifferent shot on a long par 4 into the prevailing wind.  The alternative was another lost ball and some "more of the same" attempts to shore-up an eroding bank with wood or vegetation.  I liked Fiddlesticks very much as did the then president of the German Golf Federation (with whom I had the pleasure of playing the course twice).

As a qualifier, I played English Turn while it still hosted the NO PGATour stop there.  I thought that the course was interesting and certainly capable of challenging the tournament player.  On my return to my room in NO, clubs in tow, a couple golfers in the elevator asked me where I played, I told them, to which one of the guys remarked, "oh, yes, another perfectly good swamp ruined".  He thought that Money Hill, from which they were returning, was a much superior course.

It appears that Todd Eckenrode has been chosen as the architect.  No doubt that Todd is still basking in how successful Barona Creek has been (another hotel/casino project).

I think this is exciting, Todd is a creative guy who appreciates classic designs and hopefully will craft something here unique to the area.
