Matt,

I think those are legitimate criticisms.

I would think that hotel guests should get preferred tee times.

The rooms are terrific and we had good food at SottoTerra.
I don't understand why they would close their best restaurant.

I would imagine, given the remote location, that they have to extend the area of their labor pool considerably.
I know that some of the caddies and staff drive an hour or more to get to Streamsong.

Ben,

Agree about breakfast service in the hotel lounge.

I think you have to make some allowance for the fact that they recently opened and have some fine tuning to do.

The rooms are terrific.

As to the service and quality of the food, they're going to have to improve those aspects as occupancy increases, which it will when the 3rd and possibly 4th course are open for play.

Absurd to claim that SS is remote given the millions of folks is relatively close proximity from FL and the rest of the East, how many people could drive there in 3 hours?...

Only a moron would claim that Streamsong isn't remote.

Try to find it at night without GPS to guide you.

Would you cite the census statistics that show "millions of folks in relatively close proximity"

The fact that close to 22 million people live in the greater New York City area is irrelevant.

Would you list the movie theatres close to Streamsong ?

Restaurants ?

Malls ?

Drug Stores ?

Gas Stations ?

Super Markets ?

Police Stations ?

Hospitals ?

Hotels ?

As I said, only a colossal moron would claim that Streamsong isn't remote.

SS will succeed despite Pat's hundred threads about the facility, LOL

Let's see if I understand you.
You complain when I write about courses with limited access and now you're complaining because I'm writing about a course with open access.

But once you are there, SS does feel remote. :)

I thnk I already said that.

The funny part about this thread is the whining and/or complaining about two terrific golf courses, especially golf courses that are accessible to all.

What's not to like ?

Who amongst us would be unhappy to play either course every day for the rest of our lives ?

OK, so I favor the Blue. ;D

I don't get it.

Streamsong is great.
Bandon is great
Kohler is great
Pinehurst is great.
Pebble Beach is great.

And all I hear is washawoman complaining.

All I know is I get there, change into my golf shoes, go to the range, hit balls, then to the starter who introduces me to my caddy, whose chops I immediately bust, then to the first tee for a round on a great course on a nice hot, sunny day in Florida while my friends are freezing in New Jersey.

What's not to like ?

Oh dear, I had to walk all the way back across the bridge on # 7 and up to the tee on # 8.
Yikes, tragedy.  Not perfection to a purist, I get it, but, in the overall scheme of things, given what the site was before it was converted to golf, you have to take your hat off to Tom Doak and C&C.
How about the walk from # 6 green to # 7 tee and the wow factor when the 7th green came into view.
How about the view of the golf course from the 1st tee, with the wind in your face.
Each hole is a treat.
Is there a weak hole out there ?
When you finish the round do you feel deprived ?
Do you feel that the golf course was less than adequate ?  Less than terrific ?

Hey, I'm pretty fussy when it comes to golf holes and I didn't see any clunkers out there.
I saw nothing but quality holes without repetition.
Especially given that the site is an abandoned phosphate mine from the moon.

So, let's talk about Streamsong in terms of it's ability to provide 36 holes of quality golf.
Hopefully, 54 holes in the not too distant future.

End of rant ;D

Pat: I, for one, am in full agreement with you on the courses. I think we were just responding to Matt's on-point comments about the rest of the resort. I voiced my criticisms to the staff while I was on site, too, but not as a way of saying I wasn't planning to come back. To the contrary, I plan to go back fairly regularly, and I want the place to be the best it can be (and with the courses is has and will have, Streamsong's ceiling is quite high). Unless you experience them in person, it's hard to convey how pleasurable both golf courses are to play.

Will Streamsong, like Bandon, have to create a separate clubhouse for the new course ?

Pat,

I was wondering the same thing because it doesn't look like the land for the new course goes very close to the current clubhouse. Does anyone know where the fourth course might go? Any guesses?

Matt: When we were there in late December (i.e., before the official announcement about the Black course, but at the same time Gil Hanse was touring the property), we were told that, yes, they are planning to build a second clubhouse for the Black course (and other course(s)).

Yes an additional clubhouse will be built for the black course.  A new restaurant will also go along with the new black course, however no additional lodging will be built (at this time).   Nothing is confirmed yet however I believe it's likely that the restaurant featured at SS black will serve pub food, similar to that of McKee's at Bandon, where you can get a burger and beer for dinner if you don't feel like a $60 steak.

In addition a new driving range will be built to accommodate the black course.

Also there is legitimate merit to the rumor of a par 3 and or putting course being built alongside black.  The 800 acre parcel that Mr. Hanse was given his pick of is larger than the space occupied by both red and blue.  It might make sense to build a short course or putting course alongside SS Black so don't  be surprised if they do.

Pat Mucci, what did you think were the worst holes on each course?

Bill,

There are no bad holes, some are just better than others.

I'll have to give your question some thought.

# 1 Red is a solid hole, I'm just not keen on it being the starting hole.

What holes do you find to be the worst on each course ?

"Less good" would be better than "worst," agreed.

I think 18 Blue would be better either shorter par 4 or slightly longer par 5.

I wasn't crazy about #9 Red, kinda gimmicky.

I was fine with #1 Red after holing a downhill 20'er for par the first play.  ;D

My friend Scott Weersing quipped the other day, while we were out playing, about going to SS in August.  I did not think much of it at the time, but after researching the price for the golf and lodging, it seems quite reasonable (yes, very humid hot weather).

Bill,

# 18 Blue was on my short list as well.

I'm not sure I like the idea of a par 5, but a shorter par 4 has some appeal.

I like the idea of hitting your approach from over the ridge, down in the flat.

# 9 Red is a challenging little hole that's given me fits.
It's yardage screams easy........or birdie,
but the fronting bunker and contouring of the putting surface has thwarted every effort but one.

With the new Black course, a new clubhouse and a terrific practice range, would the introduction of a high quality golf school be a great addition ?

Playing in August you will guaranteed a couple of things: hot & humid as hell (bring rain gloves) and heavy rain/thunderstorms every afternoon.

Stayed and played the Red and the Blue in April.
Enjoyed it so much repeated the same trip in July (missed the thunderstorms)
Will be going back next April to play the Trifecta to include the Black.

Food was fine
The Hotel rooms are nice
The drinks were cold and plentiful.
I highly recommend the rooftop bar for a few cocktails and a cigar at sunset.
