Pictures/Overheads of Courses ??
« on: January 10, 2002, 03:07:59 AM »
I noticed Tommys one of Hollywood

does anyone know of any other good ones that show more or less an entire course overhead - the reason I ask is that I need to see what kinds of plant/tree densities are common on golf courses.

thanks in advance

Lee,

I think that is probably a tough way to go about your research.  Even if you can find overheads, usually they are not taken very often at a particular course, so you will just be getting a snapshot in time.

Maybe, you might put a question to the group on exactly what you are trying to do with tree density.  FYI, some notable courses (e.g., Oakmont and Winged Foot) have recently gone through tree removal programs, thus people might care to comment on this subject.

Lee,
From my relative short experience, Aerials show so much, but you also have to decipher what you are looking at. (Meaning the site and all of its contours and natural shapes and forms.)

Yes. it will show trees, but some of those trees are going o be giving off shadows, making them look much bigger then they actually are. It would serve you best to try to really look deep and study all of the images with ones from on the ground and hopefully come to more solid conclusions.

www.mapquest.com is now that website I'm using most for piecing together aerials. You can simply punch in the address of the club or course you want to look at and go from there. ONce you get the map, you just have to click on their Aerial photo tab for a color image that is usually pretty good.

Another site I found of interest, which will greatly help you is one based in England, which led to a program which you can downlad off the internet that allows you to zoom in easily as well as measure terraforms. I'll have to hunt it down for you, so email me so I can remember to get it for you!

Lee,
I have a bunch of aerials I'll e-mail to you.  Some time in the future I will "paste" them together, so each course has one pic of entire course.  Then I would like to post them here.

The Hagley museum in Wilmington Delaware 302.658.2400 has numerous arial photos of courses in the Delaware Valley from the 1920's and 1930's.  It is a tremendous resource and worth the trip if you are in the region.

Good luck

Lee,
If you are looking for aerial photographs check out the attached link.  You have to know where the prospective course is located in relation to identifiable roadways/natural features.  The resoluition of these photos leaves a bit to be desired, because they are shot from a high altitude airplane(satellite, maybe?).  You will also notice that the photo shown is generally from no later than ten years previous, often one to five years old.  If you have any questions about this website, let me know.  You can download images to print out later.  The only drawback is the clarity of the image you would print is a function of the resolution--therefore, you can't print to fit to large a sheet of paper.

Lee,
All the images I sent you are from Mapquest.com, which covers a little more of the U.S. than Terraserver does, and has a lot of color aerials (not all).

The following site has great aerial photos of courses in the UK.

http://www.multimap.com/photoinfo.html

Just type in the postcode of the course you want to see and navigate around. For example for Sunningdale SL5 9RW, for Swinley Forest SL9 5LE, for Walton Heath KT20 7TP etc.
