As we're less than a year out from the PGA Championship, I'll be posting interesting tidbits on The Ocean Course from time to time.  I got this from our Superintendent.  It's the amount of tended turf on The Ocean Course.  I would imagine that with the Coore and Crenshaw renovations at No. 2, it might be similar.  I would also imagine that it's about 1/3 of what a normal course has:

Front 9 :  42.25 Acres (grass only)
Greens :  1.33 Acres
Tees :   1.72 Acres
Fairways : 13.7 Acres
Roughs : 25.5
Sand : 13 acres (estimate only)


Back 9 : 43.13 Acres (grass only)
Greens : 1.46 Acres
Tees : 1.97 Acres
Fairways : 14.3 Acres
Roughs : 25.4 Acres
Sand : 14 Acres (estimate only)

Range : 20 Acres
Range Tee : 1.28 Acres

Paspalum Field : 2.2 Acres (the field behind the 1st tee to where the old clubhouse used to be)

Total Acreage : 108.86 Acres

100 acres is a lot of grass, actually ... in Arizona courses are limited to less than 90.  And I don't remember the number I heard for Pinehurst, but it is WAY less than 90, because so much of it is open sand or pine needles.

Jeepers Jeff, that was my internal response.  I am guessing Mike made a maths error and that he doesn't really believe most courses have 300 acres of tended turf.

Twice as much rough as fairway? I wouldn't have predicted that...

Wehave 110 acres of tended turf, which is on the higher side of courses in Florida. We do not have any native areas, or waste bunkers,just a lot of rough.

So your course has 45 acres of short-mow and 65 acres of rough.

The numbers from Kiawah include the range and turf farm, etc. The equivalent numbers for the Ocean Course are around 35 acres of short-mow and 51 acres of rough. Basically 3/4 of grass area, comparing like for like.

5 acres greens
7-9 acres rough (it changes based on season and rainfall)
The rest is mowed at fwy height, 1/2 inch, and includes fwys, tees, approaches, surrounds, collars...etc
