Daily Play at The Rim

This might be old news for some but I just discovered that The Rim in Payson, AZ has been allowing limited daily-fee play for the past year or so.

The club is an hour north of Scottsdale and in all honesty might be my favorite course I've ever played. It's a Weiskopf/Moorish course and it's just spectacular. It's also a great way to play in Arizona in the summer and be totally comfortable at 80 degrees or so. If you have an opportunity to play here, you really must go.

As far as I know, Chaparral Pines is still private.

I would certainly encourage anyone that gets the chance to play The Rim. Its a beautiful place and a some good holes with a couple odd ones thrown in. The 2nd hole pictured, #16, gets a bit narrow for my taste, but its a cool view. Its not as good as Forest Highlands Canyon in my view, but has some similarities. Its challenging, but reasonable for the average golfer.

Chaparral Pines is on similar terrain but is fairly different. Its more of a players course with less width but some birdie holes for the better player. Matt Ward is a big fan, but I found it a little too penal to be considered as good as The Rim. Its still very pretty, and has some good holes. I wouldn't turn down that one either admittedly. I believe its older and more established--the members might own it now. Both courses were originally built by the same firm.

I never played CP, although my understanding was always that The Rim was better. CP sure looks beautiful though!

I have played both three times, and felt that CP is less manicured, has less spectacular views of the adjacent scenery, and was a little more resistant to scoring.  The Rim also seemed to have a better flow from one hole to the next.  Both courses would be extremely challanging to walk.  With The Rim's incredible clubhouse, it made the experience very exclusive.  It's too bad they went BK, but it does provide people opportunities to play it for some time.  I had friends that were members at both: right after The Rim was turned over to the members, there was a 100K assesment.  I'm not sure if that has been adjudicated.

Rim is also offering an Associate membership to members at some private clubs in the Valley. It is a very good course, much more enjoyable to play in my opinion than Chaparral Pines.  We walked the course last summer but it wasn't easy.  CP is not walkable unless you're a mountain goat.

An interesting ad appeared in the business section of the Wednesday 6/29/11 Arizona Republic.

"This could be your last chance to play The Rim Golf Club.
On August 31, we plan to return to being a private club.
Tee times are limited!"

I have played the course and think it is a very good course and certainly worth a visit.  I do think the property is just a bit severe which in my opinion prevents it from being a great course.  It may not be unwalkable but would certainly be a difficult walk. A very good mix of holes and some interesting use of the terrain and natural features.  There are a few down then up holes that I recall generate some seriously long and uphill shots to the green (#10 comes to mind). Mixed feelings about the split fairway hole (#14).   I'm not sure this would be my ideal everyday type of course but overall it is well done, in a scenic setting and a welcome break from the desert golf down in the valley.

I played here last summer and loved it. Easily my favorite course in the state (mind that I have played very few od the private courses, however), and probably my favorite mountain golf course.
