The Brabazon @ Burnham & Berrow
« on: June 24, 2011, 06:13:41 AM »
I don't know what the weather was like yesterday, but the scores are shocking.  Over half the field shot 80 or higher and only one guy broke par.  And they say we need to toughen the course up????  The weather is meant to be sedate for today and the weekend so perhaps a better reflection of the course will be on offer.

Sean,

Scoring certainly seemed high yesterday but it looks like its better today...

Off the back tees the course is in the region of 6,900 if I remember correctly, but some of the new back tees are obviously killers? The 5th is a small green with some interesting contours, but with that new tee at around the 200yard mark, into the wind it would be a real tough hole. I've seen plenty of comments recently about top pros complaining, with them wanting larger flatter greens, killing off the interesting architecture, so lets hope these top amateurs don't start doing the same thing.

Cheers,

James

Weather was not good yesterday, 80 was a fair score by all accounts. Paul Kinnear was out in 43 and dropped another on the back nine, he got round in 76 with no birdies and no eagles but he did bang it in from 270 yards with a 3 iron at the 13th which smartened up his card. Few on -2 at the moment.

It looks like scores have improved, but I am still very surprised by the high scores.  I predicted something like -6 would win with as many as six to eight guys under par unless the weather was horrible.  These guys just aren't going as low as I anticipated when the weather was calm on Friday and not bad yesterday.  Only 24 scores under par through three days.  This seems incredible to me as the course isn't long for these guys though there are tees hots where laying up is wise.  None of the par 5s are par 5s for these guys.  I am just trying to imagine what is catching these guys out or are they not as good as we are led to believe.

I see Stiggy Hodgson is playing.  He was quite a star at the Merion Walker Cup.
