The 1921 R and A Rules of Golf were the first to define the size and weight of a golf ball. The rule also contained these words, 'The Rules of Golf Committee will take whatever steps it thinks necessary to limit the power of the ball with regard to distance, should any ball of greater power be introduced.'

Are those words still part of the Rules as they stand today Mark? Maybe you should drop a quick post-card to Peter Dawson and ask him if he agrees about a missed opportunity?!

There is a good website which reproduces all the significant rules of golf throughout history. Very helpfully whoever has compiled it prefaces each issue with a summary of the changes or innovations. http://www.ruleshistory.com/
