Guilty Pleasure: Wynn Golf Club
« on: June 23, 2011, 11:04:02 AM »
I know, I know I am not SUPPOSED to like this.  Tiny plot of land.  Totally artificial course.  Tom Fazio design....but for me, this works. Better variety than usual from Tom F, a couple of actually memorable holes, very forgiving off the tee but fairly interesting on the approaches, great condition most of the time and an easy "commute" from the room.  Perfect when you maybe haven't slept enough, don't feel so great, need a little sunshine, and don't want to wait on any shots. Have now played it 3 times and have no complaints.

Jeff,

I agree.  Somehow the artificial thing works in Vegas.  Hell the whole town is one big movie set.   And given that you're usually up till 5 AM every night in Vegas, it's huge to be able to roll right out onto the course rather than driving for 45 minutes out in the desert.  Given what the client wanted and the land he was given, he did a very solid job and it's a go-to course when in town, particularly on hot summer afternoons when the price comes down out of the stratosphere...Of course I'm still a bit nostalgic about the old Desert Inn course, but not because of the GCA. (more money was won and lost on that course than pretty much any course you can name)...

i am with you on this one as well.   Tough but fair, some great holes and more straight forward than many fazio courses.   I love the 18th hole.

I still believe this is one of the top 5 courses in Vegas.

So am I allowed to say "Guilty Pleasure: Cascata", or is that taking it too far?

:). I think that takes it too far.  I don't really like Cascata much at all.  I didn't find any of it memorable at all. Other than the stream running through the pro shop.

I'm with you about the old DI course, it was fun and had some ball buster par 4's.   I used to spend a fair amount of time in LV during my trade show contractor days, and those were the days when the pit bosses could give you a card and you could just show up at the DI.   It was by far the best course in Vegas.

That's 30 minutes on the black jack table.  You actually save money by playing golf in Vegas.

I enjoyed it as well when I played it.

Jin: The GCA guys I've met aren't the type who would consider playing blackjack at those levels.

Jerry,

I paid the $250 August afternoon rate on back to back days of 105 degree heat...best thing is you can drink a bottle of water on every hole, never break a sweat and don't have to worry about where the bathrooms are located... 8)  And yes, for some it can be a bargain just to stay away from the tables for 4 hours....

There were three things I liked about Wynn Golf Club, only one of which would bring me back.

1.  It's an impressive engineering job.

2.  I really liked the par 3's despite the fact that they are entirely artificial.

3.  It's really close to the casino, but it keeps you out of the casino, so you really save a lot of money, even if you pay full freight.

Only #3 would bring me back.

A number of years ago I spent quite a bit of time on business in Las Vegas and I came away with a saying/lesson about gambling:

The up side of winning is not nearly as great as the down side of losing.

I never bring any significant amount of money with me when I go to a casino.

I have paid $500 to play golf but only if I viewed the course as important architecture - Wynn wouldn't fall into that category.  l

I was told that the Wynn Golf Club would only be there in the next 20 years and then the land would be developed - but hey thats Vegas planning for you!

The waterfall on the rear of the 18th was magnificent and hideous!

Cheers
