does anyone ever play the 19th hole
« on: October 24, 2010, 10:53:39 AM »
at Sebonack?
or anywhere else where 19 isn't on the way to the clubhouse.
Having played there 8-10 times,I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I've never played it (or even thought about it)
It looks like a great hole.

Does building and maintaining such a hole even make sense?

edit: it probably makes good sense with cottages on site

My group played the 19th hole there this fall despite the fact that the sun had likely already set.  I thought it was a neat hole and a fun concept.  Earlier in our round we saw another group playing the hole to settle up their bets.  If time permitted I don't think that I would ever pass it up.

Jeff,

I was of the impression that about 1/3 of groups played the 19th, but that was in the first year or two so it may not hold up long term.  I have sometimes thought about just skipping the 17th and playing 19 instead, but that's a personal matter.

The 19th came about in a roundabout way.  Originally Michael wanted us to put the first green over there, and in fact he keeps telling Mike Davis they should use it as an alternate green for the Women's Open ... but Jack and I politely pointed out that would bring the o.b. right too much into play, plus make for a very long walk to #2 tee.  So, Michael started campaigning for us to build something there to use the space, and we couldn't argue that it was a great location.  For a while we just thought we would make it a short game practice area, and sometimes it is used for that; but it was the superintendent Garret Bodington who took me over to where the 19th tee is now and asked if we couldn't make it a 19th hole.

I think it's one of the coolest greens on the course; Jim Urbina and George Waters shaped it on their own and I didn't change a thing.

Forest Creek (South) in Pinehurst has a 19th hole (called the "hog" hole), which fits perfectly between the 18th green and the clubhouse. I would say that when there we play the hole 25% of the time, to settle any bets. It is a fun setting with the clubhouse patio above the green with groups having cocktails watching the play below. It's not a good enough hole on its own right to play it otherwise.

Personally, I always try to play the 19th.  I did play it at Sebonack, and wherever and whenever I find one.  When at the European Club, I just had to play all 20.  I guess if they build it, I will play it.

My group played it. We also got thde two caddies in the group to hit. They had the pin in a hole in one location, and had three balls inside 10 feet. Its cool, although I didn't understand the need for 4 tee markers.

Good question Brian.

I play matches at least half the time, but have never had one at Sebonack come down to the 19th.

Incidentally, Jeff Warne, Mr. Nicklaus chose not to play the 19th for the Grand Opening.  In fact I'm not 100% sure he even knew it was there ... We never looked at it together during the design process.

All of my rounds are either not keeping score or match play.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

The 19th hole at Kinloch is a lot of fun.  Plays across the lake from a variety of angles, and has one of the more sloped greens on the course.  When they are rolling 13+, some very entertaining things happen on that hole, meaning any match that makes it to 19 is sure to have some excitement.

I was going to note the 19th at Forest Creek as well. We play it almost all of the time. It's a good hole over water that has four tee boxes. Even if you played the Long tees on the South that day, the "Hog" hole cane be played from any of the tee boxes presenting different lengths and angles. It's a fun way to end the day and it's location between the 18th on the South and the clubhouse makes it very easy to add it to the round.

At my trip around Sebonak, we looked at the 19th but didn't play it. Looked like a cool green.

As Kyle mentioned earlier, we played it about a month ago and it was a nice way to finish our day- unfortunately we were fighting a lack of sunlight and a long day of golf having done battle next door earlier in the day. Green complex was in fact very nice.

Meadows Farms... in Locust Grove outside of Fredericksburg, VA... home of the 850 yard par 6, the baseball diamond par 3, and the waterfall par 3 with tunnel and snack bar underneath... the 8,000 yard nine... two island greens... has a 19th hole... but its a warm up hole that doesn't count.  You HAVE to play it... and its actually pretty fun.  Best $20 golf experience you will find anywhere.
