Heavy sigh... i live in the greater Seattle area for 15 years and 3 of the 4 best courses in Washington got built after I left.  I think Alderra was open for less than a year. Timing is everything.

Sorry for the non-substantive response, but "The Members Club"?

Is there also a non-members club, perhaps one that features "spectacular golf in a great setting – with [numerous] compromises"?

Jim F. and I played at Aldarra in 2008 and both really enjoyed the course--I didn't know much about the course other than its rating in Golf Digest but we wanted a third course to play along with Sahalee and Chambers Bay. Chambers was definitely our favorite of the trip, but I'd play Aldarra 8-2 in 10 more rounds over Sahalee. I can see how it fits the Digest criteria better than GolfWeek, but I think its one of the 100 best modern courses in the USA. There's perhaps not enough greatness to push it higher than that, but well worth playing.

I hate the name. There was a specific reason for it when they named it, but no one calls it that. Logo's etc just say Aldarra. They did a poll a couple of years ago to see if people wanted to keep the name and it was a 50/50 vote so they kept it.

Sean,
Who did the green diagrams on the club's website?  They're pretty cool.

This has nothing to do with GCA, but how's the "buzz" around the club.  I was a member at Riverside down in PDX and it was very low key and friendly as you'd expect in Oregon.

I agree about this being a great golf club. I had the pleasure of playing there with one of our GCA stars a few years ago. It was a great golf experience. I found it to be a confused course with some Fazio and Palmer struggling with a site that seemed challenging in places. I played Sahale last fall with another of our GCA stars as well. I think both are great golf clubs that really represent the character and style of the Pacific Northwest. I think the members of both clubs should be very proud to have them. Both courses have great stengths and some weaknesses. Ergo Chambers Bay to me is the crown jewel of the area.

I might go 9-1 or 10-0 v. Sahalee.  I played at Aldarra with Sean a couple weeks ago, and we agreed that Chambers Bay was a slight tick better.  For me, CB pushes the envelope more than ALD, and the environment there is just surreal.  For those fortunate enough to play some of the greats in the US top 25, the same surreal special nature is found at all of them.

As for Sahalee (full disclosure, we played the South and East 9s....they play tournaments on North and South), it was very cool to get to play there and check it out.  However, to have huge trees and narrowness as the focus in this day and age is tough when compared to other great courses around the US that have been taking out trees to open playing areas for 10 years now.  I thought that Sahalee's green complexes were the most underrated feature, as most were solid and subtle.  Despite this fact, if you compared the 54 green complexes at CB, ALD, and Sahalee, only 3 or 4 of Sahalee's would crack the top 36.  When one of the best features at Sahalee is consistently beaten out by the other two layouts, it isn't hard to see which is #3 in the area.  No disrespect to Sahalee, which maintains its importance as the region's top tournament venue, but it's "perception-prime" has likely passed with all the younger bucks in the Pac NW.

Aldarra is a course I would love to see on a firm day.  Our two rounds were on humid soft days, which created an entirely different challenge, like hitting it further than 235 off the tee.  I very much enjoyed the course though, especially #2, 4, 8-10, and 16.  The most challenging aspect is the approach shots, as each green is very undulating and surrounded by trouble (with a few exceptions).  The course can lull a skilled driver to sleep off the tee, but you need some strong coffee to hit some greens!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Honestly Dan I have no idea who did the diagrams.

The buzz is very low key at Aldarra as well. The main founder is a Pine Valley guy so that is the vibe they were going after. Small clubhouse, no outside tournaments, no spousal privileges,  low number of rounds played. I haven't been to your club, but it feels  a lot like the club across the street from yours. Originally, it was a second club for a good portion of the membership, but that has changed considerably.

Tiger, Hope you are well.

That was a fun day we had there. The only round in my life I ever made 5 birdies in a row was that day, and had a 5 footer for a 6th and missed it.. I had a good round, and another GCAer who joined us had a tough day with the driver, and I beat him by probably 20-25 shots. The next day at Chambers he beat me straight up by a couple of shots. You also broke the record of most logos worn that day at CB as well. Hat, shirt, shorts, belt and socks, all logoed. It was impressive.

As far as it being Top 100 Modern, I think it probably could be. I just think that there are 250ish Top 100 moderns.

A few years back it actually came close to making GD, top 100. It's score was high enough but it was 4 votes short of the minimum. Next time around, it didn't make it, which it shouldn't. I think the local raters rated it very high as it was the best around pre CB, and once CB opened and national raters came and played it, the averages came down to where it should be.
