Best 5 courses in Westchester, New York
« on: June 16, 2020, 02:41:31 PM »
There are so many great courses in Westchester but looking for opinions on the best 5.  Put them in order or just list them.  Since I started the topic, I will give my top 5 (not in any particular order).  Thoughts?

Winged Foot West
Winged Foot East
Sleepy Hollow
Quaker Ridge
Hudson National

Hard to disagree with that list.

Sleepy Hollow
Winged Foot East
Fenway
Whippoorwill
Westchester CC West

Quaker Ridge and Winged Foot West may be higher rated but I would rather play the above. Tough not to put Wykagyl in there for fun factor.

Sleepy and WF are probably on everyone's list.

It is pretty deep, thus if you gave someone the first 5 to pick, the next 5 will still be very good.

Good list.
I'd probably put QR third.  Off the tee it is better than either WF course, but they more than make up for it on the approach shots and greens.

The top 4 of Sleepy, WFW,WFE & QR are indisputable.

The 5th slot isn't and quite up for grabs.

The likes of Whippoorwill, Century, Fenway, and Wykagyl are all preferred to Hudson National in my book. I grew up in this neck of the woods, have played HN dozens of times, and still look forward to rounds at any of the aforementioned with real anticipation.

I have some friends here in Montgomery County PA that would disown me for this, but Westchester and Suffolk Counties NY are just off the charts.

Jim-You have to give Nassau County a nod as well. Here are five to start with.

Piping Rock Club
Bethpage Black
Engineers
Rockaway Hunting Club

Back to Westchester...

Where do Sunningdale , Metropolis and Old Oak fit in below the top 4 with Quaker Ridge at 4?

By the way, are there any decent public courses in Westchester County?

Pelham and Split Rock in the Bronx for public. Saxon Woods and Maple Moor ok but worth the extra the extra 10 minute drive to the home of Ruth.
Century superior to HN in SO many ways...as is Siwanoy...as is fill in the blank ;D

Jeff-I don’t think Century gets it’s due because it’s tough to access. Agree that it bests HN.

Mt. Kisco
Anglebrook
Trump-Briarcliff
Rye Golf Club (semi private)

The publics dont deserve too much mention as they are ragged and sparsely maintained... Tom Winton is most often credited with four of them,,,Saxon Woods, Maple Moor, Sprain Lake and the best of the Westchester munis, Mohansic.  The most modern of them (2005?) Hudson Hills has been the site of a handful of previous efforts. I'd love to know the original architect of the 6th and oldest Westchester muni. Dunwoodie. which was created by theater types looking for golf beyond Van Cortlandt in 1903 but went public in 1955-57.

My faves in order
Sleepy Hollow
Wykagyl
Apawamis
Winged Foot East
