Really?  In the whole history of the game?  You must think Tiger has "grown" the game a whole lot more than I think he has.

As to the modern "back to basics" attitude, I wonder how that can be better than the dramatic changes in architecture around the turn of the 20th century.
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

If it hadn't been for "A" (although I don't credit Tiger with this much of this as it began in the 80's with the boom in the economy)
we wouldn't have to deal with "B"

1) I was going to say getting away from the feathery in favor of the gutty.
2) Transatlantic travel and Colonial Wealth

Kudos Tom Kelly. Especially since OTM stopped using the feathery.

Best thing to have happened in a), golf - quality water-proof shoes/clothing - now I can still play relatively comfortably in adverse weather conditions whilst keeping dry and reasonably warm.

Best thing to have happened in b), golf course architecture - the internet - now I can very easily find wonderful courses to play and areas to visit that previously I would never have found out about.

All the best.

I don't know about best thing to happen to golf, but for me, the best thing to happen in gca was the emergence of heathland golf.

Willie Park Jr crossed my mind and would probably be my second choice for gca after Old Tom.

Rich,

I agree with you that writing about golf architecture ain't easy, but why is that the best thing about golf architecture?

As per Sean's post: when golf moved in-land from the links, and the great old architects in the UK finally figured out how to make it work. It is the most important development in golf, if for no other reason than because there is a heck of a lot more "in land" available than "links land".  I'm a little sad to see that, still to this day, it is the sand-based sea-side courses (new and old) that still get an inordinate amount of attention and praise; while to me the real marvels are the quieter, plainer inland courses that have managed to serve their purpose for a hundred years.

BEST THING?

a. in the history of Golf...CARTS (I know its controversial, but as to permitting play for more people on more types of property, it's is important as mass-produced golf balls)

b. in the history of Golf Course Architecture...the last 20 years' realization that Trees have a limited use in routing, design and can be deleterious to turf and enjoyment of play.

cheers
