Best Course with fewest bunkers?
« on: February 18, 2002, 02:39:54 AM »
Can anyone give me some opinions on what the best courses in the world are [strategically speaking] while having the fewest bunkers, and if possible providing details of some of the ways the designer made the course interesting via other means, eg mounds, swails etc..

Take your pick of Alister MacKenzie courses. Have not played Augusta, so I would pick Pasatiempo.

I guess the real question is which style do you like large rolling bunkers or small pot bunkers?

Pasatiempo has at least 62 bunkers, or 3.5 per hole.  Does this really count as "few"?  Augusta has around 41 bunkers.  Getting close to a "fewer".

Ian:

Think you're right.  Olympic only has one fairway bunker.
And it's a great course.  So I second that motion!

MacK's drawings for Augusta show only about 21 bunkers.

Bob,
My counts came from the aerials.  Interesting that they doubled the amount.

Lee,

Again you are living near one of the most famous courses to no bunkers!!  Because of the law they are not allowed to create bunkers.

Royal Ashdown Forest in East Sussex.  It received a 7 on the Doak scale.

Get out man and roam the countryside!!!

Cheers Brian

Bunkers, if they be good bunkers, and bunkers of strong character, refuse to be disregarded, and insist on asserting themselves; they do not mind being avoided, but they decline to be ignored - John Low Concerning Golf

I may be a little bias, but Fishers Island holds it own with only 40 or so bunkers.

Among modern courses that I have seen, my favorite is Cherokee Plantation, which has 35 bunkers. Every single one has a recognizable purpose that influences shot and club selection.

Donnie Beck -
Congrats on being 10th on Golf Week's new list. Good things must really be afoot out on Fishers to have impressed so many raters. Can't wait to see it this summer.

Keep up the good work!

Red Tail G.C. (Donald Steele--Ontario) apparently has just 31 bunkers. I thought it had a helluva lot more than that so I suppose those 31 really make themselves felt which is the right idea!

I think I am speaking for Mike Vegis when I say The Ocean Course.  It only has one bunker, and its three miles long.   ;D
