Looking for help
« on: March 04, 2002, 04:37:56 PM »
As my workload is pushing my available time, I am looking to add personnel in the immediate future.  There are two possibilities:
(1) full-time design associate
              and/or
(2) project-by-project on-site design coordinator/finisher.

If you are interested in such a position, please contact me via e-mail or at 231-933-9169 to discuss.

Thanks,

Mike DeVries

I'm assuming extensive experience is a pre-requisite?

Not if Jim pays me enough!   :o

Seriously, I will need someone who has experience, particularly with drawing skills for (1) and (2) on-site personnel would need experience with equipment, particularly finishing abilities and field experience.

Mike,

(231) area code, where are you located these days?  I don't suppose you are looking to add someone to your staff to man an office out of Minnesota, maybe engineering/wetland consultant?

Mike - Please tell us where you need someone. The area of the country is important.

231 area code (found in any phone book) is NW Michigan (Traverse, etc.).  Home of Crystal Downs, Kingsley Club, Arcadia Bluffs, etc.

A Clay Man,

Sorry about that.

Yes, I do live in Traverse City, MI -- the Cherry Capital of the World.

The projects are located in Muskegon, MI -- which is on Lake Michigan across from Milwaukee -- the site is away from the lake but quite excellent, with great sandy soils, mature forests, a ravine with a tributary creek in the bottom and wonderful undulation.

The other site is in the City of Marquette, MI -- up on the southern shore of Lake Superior -- an 18 hole addition to an existing (and very active) private club (with public access available) and is a rugged site with mature forest, huge rock cliffs and outcroppings, dramatic views to Lake Superior, and quite a bit of elevation change.

Hope that helps everyone.

Mike

Marquette, home of several winter olympic training teams.  Mike, don't you think you ought to tell the prospective employee's that they need to supply their own X-country skis, firearms, sleds, and should be familiar with snowmobile and dog-sled operations.  ;D  I can draw artful yellow lines in the snow, and shape snow-angels, does that count? 8)

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Mike, having been a native of Michigan for 25 years and attending Michigan Tech in the U.P. (and a snowmobiler), I am very familiar with the Marquette area.  What exactly would be the role of a person for the project in Marquette.  I don't suppose an engineering consultant with an avid love for the art of golf course architecture would be needed.

In any matter, the chance to see a work in progress in the great upper peninsula would be very welcomed.  Congratulations to the lad that lands that position!!!!

Derek,

Both courses have many options -- it could be an associate who is there part-time to help oversee and finish details or it could be a full-time on-site coordiantor that is there for that project only.  Much will depend on an individual's strengths and the arrangements made with the owner concerning construction, etc.

Thanks to everyone for the interest and great response!

Mike

Mike,

Just curious, isn't Jerry Demers out of Traverse City?
I got to know him a little when he worked with Ron Forse on Salems restoration/renovation,he had a very talented shaper on his crew as I recall. Is he still doing golf course work?

Pete,

I have had at least a dozen people call or send info. and others who have passed on the info. to someone in the business.

Ed,

Yes, Jerry Deemer lives in TC and I talked to him the other day, but I don't know his shapers or his work, as most of it is on the east coast and I haven't had the opportunity to check it out.  He is still in the business.
