Dan:

I haven't purchased the Private courses book, but I just wanted to say that I have both Lost Links and Missing Links and enjoy both tremendously -- a real resource for architecture fiends. Thanks for all of your work on this subject.

Phil:

The Private Club Guide is much better.   :)

Those books were a lot of fun to research and write (and draw), and they've certainly had a lot of legs in terms of people's interest.  As I've said before, I owe the idea of their creation entirely to the late, great Dave Marr who once told me that Claude Harmon had called The Lido was "the greatest golf course ever" - which kind of got me to thinking....

Dan,

I am enjoying the book, especially reading about courses which I am not overly familiar with.

That said, could you shed some light on the "ratings" with regard to clubs with more than one course?

Looking forward to the next book!

Mark:

That is an outstanding question - and one with which I wrestled a bit in formulating the book's design.  Initially, as you might guess, I thought in terms of giving each course its own rating, but ultimately chose not to for two reasons.  First, it would have been very challenging to do layout-wise for several reasons (mostly spacial).  And second, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that providing a rating for each course would seem too much like a design quality rating, which I was trying to stay away from.  So in the end, I decided that the Collectability Rating would have to be reflective of the club as a whole - and where major discrepancies existed in the the quality of multiple courses, I would make that clear within the text.  It was definitely a sticking point as I was planning the project, that's for sure.....

Received my copy on Friday and was able to spend some time with it over the weekend.  Fantastic effort! (do you ever get any sleep!)

Dan's just released book entitled The American Private Golf Club Guide is like Johnny Cash: It comes dressed in an all black cover and what you are after are the words.
Nice analogy, Ran. And you're no slouch with the words yourself... If I can think of the singer/songwriter you remind me of, I'll post it later.
Next!

Chris:

I seldom sleep before 3:00 a.m. (so that's an all-nighter relative to folks back east) but as those closest to me know, office hours don't begin here until at least 10:00 a.m. Pacific time... :)

Anthony:

I couldn't agree more re: Ran's word skills.  But don't worry, we'll convince him to write a book about his worldwide golfing travels before it's all said and done...
