Steve Elkington & secretinthedirt.com
« on: April 14, 2010, 04:08:11 PM »
I was on the road yesterday listening to Jim Rome and caught his excellent Interview with my favorite Tour player Steve Elkington. Elk's interview was hilarious! He was talking to Rome about St Andrews and how the caddies refer to Stevie and Tiger as "Hefty & The Cat". Elk also took Rome off guard and said how Tiger was going to St. Andrews for "a pair of jugs"!

But he was on Jim Rome to also promote his new website that I think alot of you would be interested in. It's called "secretinthedirt.com". It's a golf oriented social networking and golf instruction site. I checked it out and it looks great. It's free, will always be free and Elk is on the site personally participating at night. He seems very passionate about it and what it's purpose is. To promote golf and create of means for the public to get golf instruction without having to shell out hundreds of dollars.

If you can get a podcast of his interview on Rome yesterday you should do so. It was very funny! And you should also check out one of the nicest guys on Tours website.

One of the nicest guys on tour? That hasn't been my experience. Maybe one of the crankiest guys on tour -- but still, I think his site with a guy who is an insurance salesman in Niagara Falls is fascinating.

I love the site.  I could sit and watch Jack Burke talk all day about the players, the swing, the game and life in general.  There are some really special videos on there and I would encourage everyone to join and check them out.

Ive loved Elk since he won in '95 at Riviera. Since then he was one of my inspirations to want to come out west and work at a place like Riv. Since I was a teenager trying to get his autograph in the crowd at tournaments to help prepare a golf course for a tourney now...I have only ever had a good experience with him. I truly think he's a great guy and listening to him talk to Rome the other morning reminded me why I still like him so much. The kind of guy you know you would want to have a pint or two with...

Ive been around his website some more today and I really think it's good and that him and Jackie Burke are doing a great thing and might be on to something.

It's a great site.  The videos of swing discussion and Jackie Burke are tremendous if you are a golf instruction buff.

I find the organization of the site to be more than a little weird, but overall I like it, too. My three favorite instructors over the years have all been Golfing Machine guys (Ben Doyle, David Edel, Rick Nielsen). Elk is a TGMer as well so I'm kind of predisposed to enjoy listening to him talk instruction.  (Edit: TGM can have people running for the hills so I hasten to add that, to his credit, Elk doesn't use much of the TGM jargon at all.)

Bobby Clampett has a very solid instruction book out; his connection to TGM is well-known and documented.

So, is Elkington still TGM or did he convert to SitD?

I joined the site last night. I hope it is a success. Much like I hope someone does a better golf movie than caddie shack.

I know that I am a Luddite but getting into the site is rather frustrating.

I followed the instructions, set up a User Name, a Password, e-mail address, was notified I was enrolled, and the first time I tried to learn about Jackie Burke's take on the Masters...nada.

I recently took a leson from Ben Doyle in Carmel  It was a revelation.  I have been a scooper and caster my whole life.  Ben got me to understand how to "move my hands with my hips"  I highly recommend his instruction.  I look forward to joining Elk's site.
