Need Old Sandwich advice
« on: January 06, 2010, 05:05:30 PM »
Probably heading up to play Old Sandwich this summer, any other courses around here, Cape Cod area that you'd recommend, public and private?

Jud-

I think Boston Golf Club stands with Sand Hills, Pacific Dunes and Friar's Head as the best U.S. courses built in the past 20 years.  It's that good.

Kittansett, Oyster Harbors, Eastward Ho, Hyannisport Club are the privates if you can get access.

Waverley Oaks  and Plymouth on the public side.

Boston Golf Club is great, and the TPC Boston is pretty good after the Hanse re-do a few years ago and in the same area. Try your hardest to get on the TCC or Myopia. Eastward Ho! is the best I have seen on the Cape. Sankaty Head is a personal favorite out on Nantucket Island.

Jud,

The good ones have been mentioned, but the Mass privates are not exactly easy to get on.

The status of Waverly Oaks is up in the air, but my guess is that it will re-open with the collapse of the movie-studio funding.

Newport National is also good in RI, as well as Triggs Memorial, the Ross muni in Providence.

The decent publics actually on the cape are Captains in Brewster, Old Barnstable, Dennis Pines/Highlands, and the ultimate Cape hidden gem, Highland Links in Truro.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Thanx!

Might be tough to get the other private access on a weekend in peak season....What do you guys think of Old Sandwich? Might just push to stay in the cabin there and get a bunch of rounds in....Haven't read that much about it here....

Shelter Harbor is not to be missed, IMO.  It's in Charlestown, RI, but not too far from Plymouth environs.

According to the website, looks like Waverly Oaks is open for 2010 at least.  Might be worth paying last respects....Plymouth looks private unless I 'm missing something...

Old Sandwich is outstanding, many think top 5 in MA along with TCC, Kittansett, Salem, Taconic.

Thanx Steve,

The pictures on the website look really good.  After playing WeKoPa Saguaro and Talking Stick North over the holidays my C&C total is now 3, including Bandon Trails, and I'm really psyched to see more.

I believe Plymouth is accessible with a well-toned phone call and a desire to play early in the week...
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I have yet to play it -- but a friend of mine, who belongs to several top-ranked clubs, absolutely loves OS.  The pics look great -- someone put a nice collection of photos on here a year or so ago.

Jud,

I haven't played OS unfortunately, but would concur that Boston Golf Club is one of the very best courses built in the past 50 years.

Two friends whose opinions I value a great deal both liked it better than OS, but that's not a debate I can add value to except to point out that Boston is exceptional.

Part of me - the evil, dark side - would like to see you play Rees's course on Nantucket. There's far too many posters on here that haven't seen a "good" Rees thread.

 ;D

Nice to see you posting again, Mike, welcome back.

George,

I'd also like to hear Jud's opinon as to whether those mounds were built to hide the maintenance shack.  ;)

Ahhh...the good old days!  ;D

Good to be back, George...nice to see you here, as well.

Golf courses aside you can't go to that part of the country and not hit up the Daily Catch for dinner and Mike's for a snack afterward in the North End  ;D

There is no better 1-2 punch in all of New England that The Daily Catch & Mike's!!!!

On the golf side, Newport National is the best public the south of Boston. If you head to Kittansett make sure to hit Marion GC on point rd. George Thomas from 100 years ago w/ very little change.
