I think there is something in all of these conversations about "best of" that makes the conversation moot, to a large extent. How do you feel in your bones when you step out on to the property. These things should really be measured on endorphin levels. You can have all of the superior design in the world, but there are too many intangibles that colour one's perception of the experience to be accurate about what the "best course" is. I think "best design" is a lot easier to pin down.

Interesting Brian,

I think "Best Design" is a lot harder to pin down than "Best Course".

If you're once again going to throw out one of your haymakers (e.g., Arnold Palmer is a hypocrite), you could at least take the time to present an accurate account of what Matt said:

"I've said (before) that (Cabot Cliffs) could debut as a top 10 course in North America .... I left there (this week) having walked all 18 holes and I feel like maybe it needs to expand to not just top 10 golf courses in North America but to top 10 golf course in the world. I think it will be in the conversation with the Pebble Beaches with the Cypress Points."

Use of the word "could" is not typically associated with absolutes.

So, then his quote is essentially meaningless?

I agree 100% with you.  I don't really have a clue which courses are designed best and I strongly suspect that often times, nobody does.

I have said it before, to me, "best" is largely a meaningless description for golf courses.

Sheehy, I would also say that if you are relying on the feeling in the bones, be sure to wait for many plays to see if that feeling remains the same.

The quote, when captured accurately, is worthy of discussion.

Yes, I think they left out...

"This message sponsored by..."

I seem to remember Gary Player saying Theracian Cliffs was the best course in the world. It did make it into the Top 100 in Continental Europe list.

I'm not saying anything about Cabot Cliffs but at this stage it's all marketing and PR and it's working so good job on that front.

I'm a sucker, I'll make the trip, heck I'll go to Lofoten as well. However, perhaps they should start with breaking into the Top 100 first. All you have to do is beat out Oitavos Dunes.  ???

It is cool to see the interest around the course build. When I got on site in May there was a feeling that what we were doing was cool and that the second course at Cabot would be special and different to what was already on display at the Links. But as the summer progressed the interest has grown on what we are doing up here. I think that it's amazind that Matt and the media have shown interest in Canadian golf and what is going on in a sleepy east coast town. Breaking in to the top 10 would be amazing but I think if it happens it would be would be world shattering. I think that The Cliffs is a special place and I hope that people come to play it regardless of world rankings as I think it is a cool golf course on a great site. With an amazing team working on building the best golf course that we can build.

What I will say about rankings is that the raters experience will be from one year of limited play and one year of open play. Next year with the raters that experience limited play will also experience a more golf focused experience as there will be no club house only a temporary facility. Also the condition of the course will be coming into its own. So the guest experience will be 100% golf related. This being said I think that the ranking will be higher than the Links course and that is not a shot at the Links course. But a statement of how good the Cliffs is. I also wanted to state that the photos and videos released are only a small taste of what will the golf course will be and that there are lots of cool things that will be left for the player who comes up to discover.

This quote from the normally very reserved Bill Coore is enough to make me convinced this is going to be a very special place.
“I had the same feeling as I did at Sand Hills,” he said, alluding to the heralded Nebraska layout that he and Crenshaw built. “If we don’t deliver a great course on a site like this, then it’s our fault.”

Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.
