Troon North GC Pinnacle Course Scottsdale, AZ (Pics)
« on: October 08, 2009, 08:11:04 PM »
Troon North Golf Club is a 36 hole facility that is semi-private.  They have the monument course and the pinnacle course, which is designed by Tom Weiskopf.  It is a good course that has extremely narrow fairways that slope into the desert making them even more thin.

Thanks for posting the pics -- I can remember viviidly when Troon North first opened and all the fanfare that came with it.

No doubt it certainly broke ground for the CCFAD surge that followed.

However, IMHO, Troon North is really a secondary layout in that grouping as some really solid layouts have opened since that time. See the likes of Vista Verde as one clear example. There are no doubt a few others that can be added as well.

The "new" Pinnacle is a composite of the its original back 9 and Monument's original back 9 with some revisions by Weiskopf:

Matt,

I wouldn't classify Vista Verde as a CCFAD as there are no facilities there...yet. It's a very good course and that's it.

Steve:

I meant CCFAD in a modified sense -- Garmany, to his credit tried to provide an upscale public alternative to the privately owned courses that were the backbone of the immediate area. Troon North provided an opportunity for those from snowbird territories to sample what desert golf can be -- no doubt there was an associated price tag to go along with it.

I have found the two layouts since then to drift a bit backwards as other courses of a similar bent / affiliation have opened.

Personally, I think the two layouts can be improved but it appears unlikely that will happen.

Matt,

Sorry to be confusing. I omitted Vista Verde from my comment above.I'll correct that now. It's definitely not a CCFAD. Troon North is .

I enjoyed the original course but never played the second one.   The price got so high that I stopped considering Troon North as a reasonable alternative at least ten years ago.

Funny that the course would be described as tight.  When it first opened I thought you had more room off the tee than on other turf restriction courses.  More recent designs have so much more width.  Did the restrictions ease or have architects learned how to create more room?

Did the modified hybrids of the two courses help or hurt the overall quality of the layouts?

One way to beat the high rates at Troon North is to buy a house in the community:

Another is to play there in the middle of summer when rates are heavily discounted.

Speaking of Vista Verde, rates now are:

Vista Verde Golf Club October and November Specials

Vista Verde Golf Club
 Mon - Fri: $75 Open to 1pm | $50 after 1pm
Sat & Sun: $90 Open to 1pm | $50 after 1pm
Course is in phenomenal condition and carts can drive on the fairway.
The golf course is a modified desert style course, with cross washes on some holes; however much of the vegetation has been cleared from these washes, enabling golfers to play from them if necessary. The bunkering and greens complexes of the course give it a “Pinehurst” feel, false fronts and roll-off areas on many of the large, undulating greens.
