Is anyone familiar with this club? I have a client being transferred to St Louis and they are looking to join a club in St Louis. Thanks.

Jim:

It has two very good (although, imo somewhat too highly rated) courses.  Good practice facilities, very nice clubhouse and nice pool.  The biggest drawback is it is in FAR west county of St. Louis.  Depending on where you client will live/work, it is quite a hike.  It is probably close to an hour from downtown.

I have played there a number of times

+'s
  2 golf courses
courses are well deisgned and varied in layout
  interesting terrain

-'s
  cart focused
  hard walk, no caddies
feels like there is a lot of turnover in membership
does not have an old line club feel

Agreed with comments above, it is WAY out of st louis... Courses are good not great IMO, fun to play mostly cartball. To it seems that the membership is not really there for the golf if you know what I mean.  I think it is considred one of the higer profile clubs in the area. There are a few clubs here that are more geared toward the hardcore golfer than this place...

Thanks for the replies. My friend has two kids and is not necessarily looking for a hard core golf club. He is a good player, but the wife and kids will need a place to go as well.

Unless your friend is beholden to using the GD rankings  ;) to select a club, then I would think that Norwood Hills should merit a strong look, as might Glen Echo...  I think those two spots have a much old-time feel and character as one could want in the area, and at least they both used to be great for families...

As with most major metro areas, though, his home/work locations should dictate the club choices, as STL is really spread out, and the west side is way, way out there...

It beats the east side though. :o (from what I understand)

Peter, I believe one of our most prolific posters is a member at Norwood Hills.

Yes, indeed, I suspect he may chime in when he sees this thread.  I suspect he knows anyone needs to know about membership at NHCC...

St. Albans orginal course by Wieskopf and Morrish has some very good golf holes and can be walked, especially for nine holes on the front. The other course, by Hurdzan and co., suffers from a very difficult piece of land and a lot more in-play housing.

The most important variable (in my opinion) is based on where your friend will be living. The STL metro area is quite large and the main artery, Highway 40, is closed in sections for the next couple of years making traffic a bit of bear.

With that in mind, here's the short version on STL clubs:

There is a big 4, clubs that never seem to be short on membership interest, STLCC (the best course in town), Bellerieve (good tournament course that offers plenty of challenge), Old Warson (a solid RTJ track from the 60's with perfect putting surfaces) and Westwood, a lesser known club that Tillinghaust supposedly worked on (it has some great holes and even more potential but is horribly over-treed). These 4 clubs are all invitation only.

Two clubs mentioned earlier, Norwood CC and Glen Echo, both are full-service clubs with cool histories and excellent golf courses (36 holes in the case of Norwood). Both clubs suffer from location -- located north of the city, they are less desirable neighborhoods. Your friend could join both today for a reasonable price. One more note about Norwood... it has the largest collection of low-handicap players in town.

There are a couple of other older clubs in the suburbs, Algonquin, Sunset Hills, Meadowbrooke and Greenbriar Hills. All three are good members clubs and should be considered depending on where your friend decides to live.

If he ends up West, Persimmon Woods is a Golf Only Club by Keith Foster that stays way under the radar.  I would join in a heartbeat if I lived that direction.

Buck,
Great call on Persimmon Woods. Fantastic course. However, it is golf only, no?
