Kevin P - well, given said gentleman spent many an email trying to set up a meeting with you only to find out after that fact that said pm round had occurred, hopefully you understand the scolding.     And of course that must have been a fine day - but may I ask, was it OPTIMAL?  If you had a choice, would you not have preferred Pasatiempo the prior afternoon, then Cypress the next morning?

My thinking here remains that as great as Pasatiempo is, only the wackiest of Mackenziephiles worshipping at the shrine of his house would fail to see it as at least a bit of a let-down after Cypress Point.

But I am thinking as a player of the game, not a dead golf architect worshipper.  For those, perhaps the visit to the shrine late in the day does work better.

In any case, these are great choices to have!

OPTIMAL would have been going around CPC again and again until dark

Seriously though - if you have time and daylight on your hands and you travel from afar - why not go and play somewhere else ?Nothing you do in that region will compare to CPC and I certainly dont think playing Pasa. on the same day detracted from either experience.

Both are great courses - it's just one is in a very special league reserved for but a few.

There is as much chance of me getting to Australia in the next 15 years as there is of your nation winning the FIFA world cup.  It's just not in my reality, sadly enough.  Tell ya what though, if the latter happens, I'll make the former also happen before the end of July, marriage be damned.  Deal?

 

As for playing Pasa and CPC, read my other posts in this thread; I am all for playing more golf after leaving CPC.  Oh gosh yes.  The question was just what is the BETTER way to do CPC and Pasa, if one is going to do those two.  And I do believe if one has the choice, one ought to play Pasa first so that in no way is it a let-down, as it sure might be if one plays it second.

I played Cypress Point today.

My randon thoughts are,

This week there is no unaccompanied guest play, you must play with a member.  The course was packed today, cars everywhere and parking was extended all the way down the driveway.

The whos who of the golf world were at CPC today.  Weather was amazing, sunny, modertly warm with a two club breeze.

We teed off just after 9am and Phil Mickelson was in the group behind us with 3 members.  About 25 to 50 spectators followed him.  On #2 he hit driver 6 iron.  Phil shot even on the front.  On #10 which was downwind he probably he hit his drive 360.  He hit wedge into this uphill par 5.  On #17 he hit driver to the left, chipped it up and 3 putted.  A member told me that last month Phil played CPC and hit his drive on #17 onto the 18th tee.

Phil likes Tigers chances, said he playing really well.

CPC is in great shape.  No rough, greens running about 11.  This is maybe my 10th round at Cypress and I've been concerned that CPC is becoming over conditioned, almost Augusta type conditioning.  I didn't see that today which was a pleasant surprise.

Casey Reamer is a first class pro.

The project with Tom Fazio to rebuild the greens has been put on hold.  I saw no signs of nemitode.

To Bob Huntley: I take back my comments about the 14th hole, it's a great hole.

I've never had a problem with the 18th until today, which I blocked a 4 iron off the tee dead right.

The new blue tee on #16 adds 20 yards and and makes the hole play exceptionally long.

Playing out of bunker sand and natural sand dune sand is completly different.

The food in the clubhouse is excellent.

You forgot to mention the obvious question: How did Phil go on #16 ?

I didn't see his tee shot on #16.  The pin was in the front right.  I saw them putting but that's it.

My other thought is,

"Hitting your tee shot onto the green at #16 is a great achievement but then 3 putting is a great letdown."

I would like to know what he did on #11.  This par 4 was playing into a good 2 or 3 club wind and I hit driver - 3 wood to the back of the green.  I had 225 to the pin but was in between clubs since my hybrid would have gone to high and I wasn't carrying a 3 iron so I chocked down on a 3 wood.  It was akward.
