Tom Doak,

I think the alternate green idea is a great one provided there's ample land for that purpose.

I like the concept of requiring golfers to hit at least three (3) good consecutive shots.

If one looks back to the 1950's that was almost the norm on almost all par 5's.

Now, it's driver, whatever, wedge on most par 5's for a decent striker of the golf ball.

Requiring a golfer to hit driver, 3-wood, long iron is a specific test/challenge that's been lost over the years.

I can't remember a televised event where I saw a PGA Tour Pro hit three long clubs into a par 5, can anyone recall such ?

Your alternate green idea could be a perfect solution.

A little off topic, but our course is fairly long 7600 from the back, we (members) play from the back tees once a year and its very popular and we have just built a second 18 and by using a combination of the 18 holes (4 from the new course)the course for next years annual event will measure
8278 yards, par will be 79, although I think it will be fairly easy with so many par 5 holes, the 9th will be a par 6. Four shotter for most, Three big shots for good players, a few will get up with an iron third, tour pro's probably go in with a 8 iron or less.
