Chicago golf this Sunday?
« on: March 13, 2009, 10:54:35 AM »
as of right now the weather is supposed to be 50 and somewhat sunny, so i think i hear my clubs saying they need to get out for a 4-hour walk on Sunday

Cog Hill keeps 2 of its courses open...anyone interested in joining me?  get out there about 10:00am or so?  are there any other courses open in the area?

IM me if you might be interested
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

I thought you meant Chicago GC... was getting ready to check air fares....

Whoops, never mind.  I'm going to stay here where 50 and somewhat sunny is bad day.

Dave:

I can report on CA golf.. haven't played much since 1/1.. but in the rounds I have, I still have yet to see a single person use the cheater line.

Is it indeed much ado about nothing?

Or an alternative answer is no one ever did it before there was a cheater line, no one does it much since some pros or others have started, and it's really no big deal whatsoever.

But of course such an answer would qualify 5000 potentially billable hours as wasted for you, so I will not dare postulate such a thing.

How many times does Dave have to say it....

"I don't do billable hours!"...........

Joe - then change it to "time that could have been better spent."

You play with a competitive group, Dave.

Out here in the real world... my statement stands.  I have yet to see a single person use it.

The only time I would ever use a cheater line is in a match with Mr. Schmidt and then only on a critical putt.  Otherwise I think it's pretty much useless.

See no evil, maybe evil doesn't exist, Dave?

And John that was a great one.  If Schmidt makes it out here for KP and I get to play with him, I am going to use the crap out of the cheater line, slowly taking my putter cover off before each use as well.

So close to Chicago and so far away...hopefully this last blast in Northern Michigan clears out in the next two weeks.

As for the cheater line, as a high school golf coach I can attest to its overuse, and all it takes is a couple of guys to derail an entire event.  Here's hoping I don't see as many 3-hour 9-hole rounds this year...

This is why I don't get too bent on preferences. If your opponent learns yours, they go for the juggler.

Dave, your future rounds of golf with GCA'ers is predestined........brats included.

Paul:  please report back whether anybody uses a cheater line.  In my view, anybody using a cheater line on bumpy, uncut, frozen-footprint-indented March greens in Chicago deserves a long walk off a short pier straight into a lake somewhere... nevertheless, I'm sure somebody will, out of force of habit, the habit being irrepressable stupidity...

Navy Pier perhaps?  ???

Add a putter cover, and it's a quad all day, every day...

This is not really funny, especially to the anti-cheater line purist crowd, but I bought a new Sun Mtn lite bag yesterday, and hanging on it was..........

.......one of those plastic half-sphere doohickeys that helps you mark a long, straight cheater line on your ball.  The cheater line has become standard equipment!

It's obviously a device for something else.....there's no market for a cheater line, I've heard.

Maybe it's something left over from a truck stop vending machine supplier.....and Sun Mountain got them for cheap....

There is no alternative answer.

20%+ of the guys I play with use it.  It's actually quite a rare foursome where somebody isn't lining up a cheater line, and since I'm 1 of the 4, it's probably closer to 33%.

Show me a guy who had the shaft in his driver replaced, had irons bent or otherwise customized or uses a rangefinder or a yardage book, and I'll show you a cheater line user at least 80% of the time...

Let's see, my driver shaft was too heavy, I got my irons at HotStix, a have a Bushnell in my bag. . . and I love my cheater line. ::)  I'll probably get struck by lightning.

Paul, I just got back from Arizona, so I think I'll play cards on Sundays till it warms up a tad more. . .

Mark, normally weather excuses would not be allowed, but since you are an original Jans member you are hereby excused!

I may be sitting, frozen cheeks and all, on the lake watching the Wildcat lacrosse team tomorrow, tho if they'll let me I may have my Cartcat cart heater in the stands -- sorry Dave, I assume that's another no-no in the Shivas list of no-nos, but I do love keeping the pinkies warm when I'm playing here in the spring and winter. . .

What about a (forward) Jans outing?  I'm guessing it'll be too busy for the full reverse, but we might be able to mix in a few reverse holes.

Smolens, if you're going to be in Evanston anyway, what the heck!

And Shivas, if you come out I promise not to use my cheater line.

Sorry Mike, missed your post (maybe I should go back to using the laptop at home to surf).  Hit balls off the mats at Cog and played poker instead.
Now paying for it with being inside on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. . .
