Confidential Guide in Public Libraries
« on: October 28, 2008, 03:59:01 PM »
Does anyone know whether any public library has a copy of the Confidential Guide?  What about a university library?  Thx,
Carl

The Library of Congress as at least one copy, maybe two.

Cribbed from an earlier thread on this, circa Feb. 2007 (credit to poster Pat Craig):

Thanks to a good tip in this thread, earlier today I got in touch with the Library of Congress. And through email someone there sent me a list of every library in the United States that currently has the Confidential Guide in stock. Interestingly enough my hometown is one of them.

Hopefully this could help a few people get out and at least read through the book once or twice!

Here is the list;

Ironically enough, every time I had checked for the Confidential Guide at my local library, it wasn't available. When I asked a librarian to check on it, he said that it was listed as "in stock" but we couldn't find it in the actual library.

Leading us to believe someone stole it.  >:(

Of course you can always have the book sent on loan from the Library of Congress.

Pat--I would suspect that experience may be a common one. That would be one thing I would worry about in a public library. In a university library they are generally more secure. Shame things like this happen, but with those books valued at $500+ in many cases, people are willing to risk it.

Santa Barbara once had two copies and one was sold on ebay.  I called the library during the sale and they decided not to take action.  They have put the second copy in a more secure location which leaves my only hope that a member of this site was not the purchaser.

I also recently stopped a reputable San Francisco auction house from selling a Xeroxed copy.

I saw a copy at my local library, and I think I'd rather not give the library's name until I am certain they know its value and can protect it. ;)

I just spent time looking at Doak's Confidential Guide at the Penn State Library. This was my first time actually seeing the book in person. The book was a lot bigger than I expected. I was also very happy to see PSU protecting this important and rare book. They house it in a special rare books collection. In order to look at it, I had to check all my belongings in a locker room, have a specialist retrieve it from a locked room and view it in a special reading room. They do not allow the books to leave this room.

I know it has been spoken about before, but I feel that many of the courses need to be looked at or rated again. Courses such as Plainfield, Oakmont, or Yeaman's Hall have undergone significant restorations that deserve another look.

Overall I was extremely impressed with the book and the candid remarks by Tom. A great resource for all.

Jack--welcome to the site. Mr. Doak has noted that he thinks some of the courses could perhaps be re-graded, as well. But he has noted on here that he grew tired of having to defend his ratings. Therefore, we will likely not see a revision. But being new, you would not have known this. Again, welcome to the site.

Just got a copy through inter-library loan here in Ohio.  Only cost me $5.  Can't wait to finally read it.

I have seen the book at two libraries and once checked it out interlibrary loan.  The public books are easily accessible should anyone like to have a read.  How cool!

For those in NY....
the Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck has a copy, in open stacks....its never been checked out and they have no ideas what they have there.
Also, the Buffalo public library has one, that the loaned to Juilliard for me, I had it for a month, and just returned it, solely because of my wife's guilting of my conscience  ;)

Neither knows how rare a book it is.

Great post.  Thanks especially for the list of locations, including one in KY (who knew?).  I've requested it though an interlibrary loan.
