is what I paid and how long it took me to play Pompano Beach's Pines Course, a surprisingly good municipal layout on Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. The 3 hour and 20 minute round was with a German couple in their early 70's who both walked 18 (as I did, of course). We teed off at 6:50, probably about the 5th or 6th group out, and finished at 10:10.
Pompano Beach has a 36 hole municipal complex attributed to Von Haage and Devlin and I was pretty impressed. Although as flat as a pancake there enough wind to keep it interesting and a good collection of holes that play with different wind conditions (we had about a 1 1/2 club breeze all morning even though we went out early, I can imagine that late in the day must be much more difficult). The back 9 starts out with a par 5, a 456 yard (Blue tees) into wind par 4, and then another par 5, after which you get a respite before 3 finishing holes that play around water that are a real test-18 reminds me of the 18th at PGA West and 16, a dogleg right par 4 with water on the right, really demands a tee shot to the left to give yourself any chance of a good look at the flag.
The other publics in South Florida that demand carts should really go out to this complex and take notes, it puts to rest all the bs that you have to ride because of speed of play. What a joke.
