i thought the discussion/post on the castle was one of the best i've read on GCA. was in scotland in 05--drove by that parcel of land every day. flat and boring.
what does this mackenzie quote say about what and where we are building golf courses today?
but first a preface...cliff roberts was showing dr. mac the course called whippoorwill in westchester county.
dont know if it was pre/post ross. banks "converted" it. we know that now.
so the course was "situated on the highest ground in the area, it was extremely hilly. i was IMPRESSED with the exceptional views and one hole in particular cost $100,000 to construct because part of it had to be cut through solid granite."
the members "pressed him at lunchtime for his opinion. 'It's most remarkable' he said.
then he elaborated....."....it's most remarkable that anyone could be damn fool enough to try to build a course on ground that is so obviously unsuitable for golf."
big thanks to geoff shac for the quote
