Did I make the right choice?

Last week I had a choice to make:  I have two tickets for Monday's practice rounds or an early start on a family Hilton Head trip on which I will get to play May River and maybe another top calibre course.  I chose to get a head start on Spring Break and gave a buddy my tickets.   I can't wait to play May River.

Did I make the right choice?  I haven't played either course but I have been to Augusta 16 times.

Yeah, I might have been able to do it all but my wife wouldn't have been happy and it would have been a logistical pain for the family.

I have just discovered May River in the last six months.

I think it a superlative design in a beautiful setting interesting for the departure from past Nicklaus designs it achieves. Great service and clubhouse. The logo can be viewed in the flesh in a late afternoon sun when looking across the 18 th green from the veranda. Be sure and take advantage of the short game practice area as you could esaily spend a couple of hours there.

One day, perhaps sooner rather than later, i intend to have a place there. See if Tommy is taking a break from his regular Augusta caddie gig now that the big boys are there.

Wrong answer

Masters on Monday followed by a drive to Hilton Head would have been the correct answer.  I don't care what folks think about ANGC's architecture, a visit is a must do for any serious lover of the game.  My 2005 visit, which consisted of 2 practice rounds, is one of the best vacations I've ever had.

Thanks for your responses.

I have been very fortunate that I have been to Augusta many many times but as I type this, I am quite jealous as my Dad, Brother and Sister in law, 2 nephews and my best friend are there walking the grounds and I am packing the family van but it just didn't work out. 

I can't describe how excited I am to play May River at least once if not more this week and possibly another top notch course. 

From what I understand, Ward, you are making a great choice if you are choosing to buy a place there.  I will be sure to post once I return.

As much as I'd enjoy seeing Augusta National during Masters week, I think playing golf instead of watching others play golf is always the right answer. I love the game of golf because I love to play. Even at the highest levels of competition on the greatest courses being a spectator is always a distant second to being a golfer in my book.

You made the right choice, but temper your enthusiam for May River a bit, it's a fine course, you will enjoy it 100%, but if you lower your expectatons a bit, I think you'll like it better

You can ignore Golf, it won’t go away, it will always be there. 

Ignore your wife and family and all you may have left is Golf.

The Wife & Family always come first.

No offense to the Masters lovers, but PLAYING golf is always superior to WATCHING golf.  I'm sure I will get to Augusta someday, but I'm not clamoring.

Amended?:  I meant primarily watching on TV, that playing is better than sitting at home watching on TV.  However, the act of flying to a tournament, however grand, jostling with crowds, never seeing everyone (you just can't usually), beating it back to the aiport, etc...sounds much less inviting than 2-3 rounds at your home course with your buddies... and I say this after having been to a couple tour events, and two US Opens.

Brad - even better is playing a nice, fun round around 10am, grabbing a nice lunch, and wandering home to watch The Masters on HD.     Then having delusions of grandeur while watching the guys that can really play, and thinking, "I could hit that shot".   NOT!

This must be an on-going dilemma for gca enthusiasts. I'm sure everyone on here has had a similar "should I or shouldn't I" situation regarding golf and life.  Mine came on the 12th hole at Garden City when I was invited to play the course for the first time; I could either finish out the round (at seven o'clock on an early summer evening with the assistant superintendent) or leave for a date with a gorgeous blonde in the city. 

[edit] At the time the choice was simple and I would make the same decision today. Despite the fact that I'm not seeing the girl anymore, you always have to chose your personnel life over golf (a rationalization that becomes clouded in Brock's example which was essentially a decision of "Golf or Golf").

How many people actually decide for golf over their personnel life.  Long story short...I think he made a good decision.
