I just found this amazing link to Olympia Fields.  It should help in any discussion.  http://www.ofcc.info/Default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=242702&ssid=97763&vnf=1

Kalen,

I think any course without a par 3 over 230 yds or a par four over 470 is out of the loop.

I think you have to cross off St. Louis CC from your list then.  Longest par 4 is about 410 or so.  Number two comes closer to meeting your requirement, but I'm pretty sure doesn't reach 230.  When they put the pin on the front tier, as they often did when I caddied there, it's shorter still.

In general, haven't you likely ruled out most courses in the 6600 or less range?  You might also have to eliminate NGLA, Royal Melbourne Composite and Prairie Dunes from any consideration.

Jim,

St. Louis CC #2 counts.  Don't forget that it is uphill to a huge biarritz green.

Olympia Fields looks really good but what's the story with the cartpaths - especially one running diagonally across a par 3 - #13.

Jim,

St. Louis CC #2 counts.  Don't forget that it is uphill to a huge biarritz green.

Those distances you gave are not a hard-and-fast rule, then.  Lay of land can affect them.  So can architecture.  What about conditions, e.g. wind?

I haven't played Pacific Dunes.  Just looked at a scorecard online though.  One par 4 is 463.  Another is 464.  Darn close to 470.  I know I've heard the wind can howl there.  When it's in your face, can't those holes play a lot longer than 470?

Even if #2 at SLCC makes the grade -- and with a front pin it seems like it wouldn't -- the rest of the course must play real real short for the modern game.  I expect a strong 25-year old will have wedges or short irons into all the par 4's.

btw, of the courses I know personally on your list, I love Riviera and Olympic Lake...really really like SLCC...was disappointed in Torrey and Bellerive.  In the St. Louis area, I would choose Westwood over Bellerive any day of the year.

I have never played Westwood or Old Warson in the St. Louis area.  This type of list would be more interesting if people knew what courses were played and left off.  I have never thought about this before so I do forget some of the great places I have played.  Just remembered Crooked Stick this morning.

I have leaned to love the par three that requires driver of something very near to it.  I'm not as big a fan of long par 4's but do enjoy hitting 3 iron every chance I get.
