Tampa or Orlando?

All,

For the yearly Spring golf trip with the guys, options for 2008 are Tampa or Orlando.  From a strictly golf POV, would Tampa be best with Lake Jovita, Fox Hollow (or TPC) and World Woods (or some other courses?)? Or Orlando with Southern Dunes, Mystic Dunes and Bridgewater (or some other courses?).

Andy, I've taken small groups down to the Tampa area three of the last 7 years and my guys have always loved it.  Lake Jovita is very nice, and, of course, WW is really awesome.  If you are looking for a beautiful place to stay, LJ is a candidate.  

I've not played enough courses around Orlando to be able to comment.

Andy,

Never did Tampa other than WW.

Our group did Orlando quite a bit and enjoyed it.

Staying on the south/Disney area you get many options for lodging and all the golf is pretty close. Like Celebration, Souther Dunes & Grand Cypress New alot.

There are some good options on the north side (Black Bear & Legacy @ Alaqua) which we enjoyed tremndously

From my limited perspective, i.e., travel, not residence, I'd say it's a toss up for the golf, although Tampa does have the casino and baseball for the evenings.

Our group did Tampa/Brookesville for several years. Great golf in Brookesville with nothing else to do. We usually flew into Tampa and played someplace in the Tampa area day of arrival and day of departure. We stayed at the Plantation Inn about 20 minutes from World Woods. Great accomodations but we did not consider their course.

There is also a new Pete Dye course in Brookesville Southern Hills Plantation that is awesome. It is private but the membership has been slow to sell and they will accomodate out of town players. A must play!

Recently we have stayed at the Ginn Resort outside of Orlando. We stay in 4 bedroom houses which is a treat! The Palmer and Watson Courses are good and very convenient. The Nicklaus has been struggling with conditions. It is located away from the other courses. The package deal is pretty good and very convenient!

Southern Dunes is just as much Tampa as Orlando, as is Club at Bridgewater.

There's plenty to do in Brooksville with the right company. World Woods, Lake Jovita, Southern Hills Plantation and a bunch of lesser known places are viable options.

Plus Tampa has me.

Andy, probably a toss up between Tampa and Orlando, World Woods can be reached from both locations.  Does anyone know anything about Sugarloaf Mountain outside of Orlando?  A Crenshaw Course, yet to open?

My group goes to Orlando every March.  I can't add anything in the way of comparison to Tampa, but everyone is very happy with Orlando.  The group is pretty value-conscious, so we go middle-of-the-road with accomodations and courses.  Usually try to have 1 or 2 top-tier courses in the rotation along with some other good values.

We stay in some vacation condos off Hwy 192 down near Disney - lots of chain restaurants, etc.

We've played:

Southern Dunes
Harmony Golf Preserve
Orange County National (Crooked Cat, Panther Lake)
Diamondback
Ridgewood Lakes
Highlands Reserve
Royal St. Cloud
Northshore
Shingle Creek
Stoneybrook West
Palisades

For example, last March our lineup was:

Thursday pm - Royal St. Cloud
Friday am/pm - Ridgewood Lakes x 2
Saturday am/pm - Southern Dunes x 2
Sunday am/pm - Harmony Golf Preserve x 2
Monday am - Stoneybrook West

We book through GolfPac & have been happy with their services.

St. Cloud is surprisingly solid. Both Rob Waldron and I enjoyed it (at least I think he did...) and I've been back a few times.

Diamondback I could do without, but it's not horrible. Southern Dunes is a pleasant surprise but I think most would find the new Smyers, Bridgewater, in Lakeland better.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

OLD MEMORIAL is the best course in either places. Steve Smyers did some really good work and the bunkering is incredible. Ive never been to the sandbelt to see The Met Club or Royal Melbourne, But OM is kind of what I envision it to look like. Walking with caddies and very fine condition already add to it...quite a practice area, too.

If you're looking for the convenience of a stay and play setting with a fun golf course, look into Tampa Palms CC. http://www.tampa-palmscc.com/

Our group of 16 held our annual golf marathon there last fall.  A good Art Hills country club managed by Club Corp. with a 25 room lodge in the clubhouse.  My suite was steps from the practice green and the grill with great breakfast.

The tee sheet was pretty much a few member groups and us.  We played all day long for 2 days without ever driving a car and then hit World Woods on our fly out day.

Would do it exactly the same again.

I'm no expert having played only World Woods (both courses) and a Joe Lee course called Palisades in Clermont (not bad, not worth going out of your way for), I think Kyle's advice would be the best. Had I had the opportunity to play more courses Southern Hills and Lake Jovita were the next two ideas.

Thanks for the thoughts.  

If staying in the Brooksville area, the obvious courses are World Woods and Southern Hills. What would be the third/fourth courses?  El Diablo?

If Orlando, after Bridgewater and Southern Dunes, who bats third and fourth?

I think El Diablo is a bit of a haul from Brooksville.

Truth be told? I've actually already added that notch to my bedpost.  Its been at least 15 years I believe, and all I can really remember was being mesmerized by the absolute perfect circularity of the sand traps.

Does that immunize my from the wrath of Cirba?  ;)

PS Does it also mean I am free to either play Fazio and Dye in Brooksville or a smattering of Smyers near Orlando?  ;D

Nobody has so far mentioned Innisbrook and the Copperhead.  What's up there these days?  I haven't been there for many years but it was pretty nice then, and the golf challenging.

Copperhead is still an excellent course but nothing all that special. Classic in the sense it is a good ball strikers course, drive, 4 iron, 2 putts=par.

But the architecture doesn't get your heart rate up like World Woods or the Quarry Holes at Black Diamond.

Anybody have any recent experience at The Dunes at Seville or whatever it is now known as? It's within minutes of World Woods, and many on here have called it a hidden gem. I've not made the trip to see it, but several people I trust have said that it should get some love.
