The Klondyke, Lahinch

Thought you might like to see the picture from behind the green at The Klondyke....I am standing next to a wall which leads to O.B.  The Dune in the background is in the middle of the fairway and the second shot is played over this dune.  Unbelievable!  Quirky!

If there's a course more fun to play than Lahinch, then I'd like to play it.  Strange to say, but sometimes it gets overlooked when speaking of great links courses.

This hole is one of my favorites but when I think about it, I think the only merit to the design of the hole is that it is fun.

There are no strategic decisions - just hit the fairway and hit and hope on the 2nd.

There are no memorable hazards other than the dune.

Whether the approach is good or out of bounds depends alot on chance.

It shows that fun is the factor that overrides everything else.

Yes, fun and memorable...plus, I can honestly say that I have never played another hole remotely similar to it.  Lahinch has two holes which are unique.  Can anyone think of a hole similar to The Klondyke or The Dell?  I can't.

The Klondyke is one of my favorite holes in Lahinch & it definitely has a ton of strategy.

The idea line off the tee is 15 - 20 yards further right than the fairway you can see/your natural tendencies. Also the green complex is just flat out awesome & I actually tend to miss the green right if the pin is tucked over left.

Interestingly enough, its the only pin position I like to know beforehand. I always try and look at the green while putting on the 1st. Local knowledge at its best!

Is that sodden wall at the back of the green original?

Bart,

The first time I played there there was 50 mph steady wind blowing, which was straight downwind on the Klondyke.  I hit a 4 iron off the tee about 265 and had about 190 left to the green and tried to hit an "easy" 8 iron.  Since I couldn't see where it went hitting over the hill I just hoped it was on or next to the green but no such luck.  I looked all over for my ball and couldn't find it, so I dropped one and finished the hole.

Walking to the next tee I noticed a ball sitting in a garden about 30 yards across the road behind the green, so I trespassed on over and sure enough it was my ball!  So I know the view you posted quite well, and that was the exact spot I learned a valuable lesson about playing punch shots to keep the ball down when with a very strong wind and not just when against it :)

For Doug!

For those that dont know it theres a road between the wall and the houses.

Mayday I don't know if its original. Last Easter they were rebuilding the wall but hadnt got to that section. I hopeits still  there.  There grass is ramped up to encorage the over hit, blind approach to wander voer the wall, where I believe its OOB.
Let's make GCA grate again!
