The first is the 14th MPCC Dunes. I only know this because of driving by it on 17 mile drive. The others are at MPCC as well, but I can't tell you which ones. I haven't played it.

Now where's my royalty for the Guess Where title Mike? ;)

David's right, they are all holes from MPCC.

The first is indeed the very cool #14 on the Dunes, taken from the back tee where an over the ocean shot is the direct route to the green.

The second is the par three #7 on the Shore course - another great golf hole.

The last is the par 5 10th on the Shore, taken looking back, atop the perch for 11 tee - birdied twice by yours truly when I got to play this course twice in two days a few weeks ago.  So of course it's the toughest hole on the entire 36, birdiable only by the true greats.   ;)

Does that 14th green sit as low and close to the ocean as it appears in the photo?

I've never played the course, but it looks like a winter storm could destroy the hole or at the very least do some serious damage.

Yes, it is a really good and dramatic one shotter.

Rees Jones moved it closer to the ocean and really enhanced the character of the hole when he worked on The Dunes, if I remember correctly.

John,

No it is not Raynor's routing. The original par three 14th was a very nondescript hole some forty yards to the left of what you now see. Rees Jones moved it to the edge of the rocks and created a sensational hole. We all thought it might get washed away with winter storms but in his wisdom he noted that the rocks off-shore gave a good deal of protection from the bigger wave action. Only twice in the past six years have we had to hose the salt water off the green after a storm.


All the Rees Jones detractors on this site should see this and a few other alterations he made to the Dunes Course, it might open your eyes.

My guess is the Dunes gets little talk on here because a great many participants here loved Strantz, and dislike Rees.  So the Shore gets all sorts of discussion - and rightly so, it is great - while the Dunes gets overlooked.

I've said it in here before and I'll say it again:  the Dunes is every bit the golf course the Shore is and perhaps more.  #14 is just the most spectacular hole... the other par threes are all very cool, and while the first three holes are no great shakes, after that it is one great golf hole after another.  #8, 9, 10 are all genius....

Is the surf always as rough as depicted in the first picture?  Its a very cool hole, but I'd be concerned with being washed away at high tide with waves like that. :)

The green is elevated from the surroundimg surf. I have yet to get wet playing the hole.

Of course Bob could elaborate too... all I can say is as a golfer who played it before Rees did his work and after, Rees did one hell of a job.  The course is MUCH better than it was before.

Let me put you on the spot.  I will likely get a shot at playing MPCC in the near future, but will only have one round.  If you were in my shoes and thought you might not get back there for quite sometime, which would you play.  Dunes or Shore?
